2014-15 Fall Ball Tower

FALL BALL (September 29 - November 12, 2014)
Unofficial Recaps by Roger Tower or Bruce Chase

November 12, 2014 - Gray 1, Blue 0 (4 innings)

Gray beat Blue 1-0 as Glenn Otto continued his no-hit inning with 4 more shut-out innings without a hit.  That gave him 9 straight no hit innings.  He struck out 7.  Otto walked the first batter.  He then picked him off.  After that, he retired everyone else in his 4 innings.

Austin Orewiler gave up an unearned run in the second.  Kevin McCanna reached second on an infield throwing error.  He would score the games only run on Blake Fox's single to center.  Austin struck out two and walked one in his three innings.

Fox had the only hit of the day.

John Williamson pitched a perfect inning in relief, striking out two.

See you in the spring.

November 10, 2014 - Blue 5, Gray 1 (4 innings)

The weather continued to hold for the next to last scrimmage of the fall.  Blue scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take today's scrimmage 5-1.

Dane Myers pitched for the Blue team.  Michael Rodgers pitched for the Gray team.  Each pitcher went four innings.

Myers gave up an infield single and one run in the first inning and then held on for the 5-1 win.

Gray started the top of the first with Ryan Chandler drawing a full count walk.  Several pick-off throws to first nearly caught Chandler but he managed to avoid getting picked-off.

Dane Wunderlich hit a ball to deep short between shortstop and third baseman.  Leon Byrd made a valiant effort to get the ball.  With no hope of getting Wunderlich at first, Leon attempted to force Chandler at second.  Chandler just beat throw.  When the throw skipped away from Kevin McCanna at second, Chandler scampered to third.  Connor Teykl's sac-fly to center scored Chandler.  Two ground-outs to second ended the inning.

In the bottom of the first with one out, John Williamson doubled to center.  Williamson ran hard as he attempted to stretch the hit into a triple.  Out at third. A strike-out ended the inning.

Myers retired the side in order in the second.

Gray tied the game at one as Byrd tripled to deep center-field.  Grayson Lewis drove Byrd home with a sac-fly to deep right.  Kevin McCanna singled to second.  Reached second on a balk.  Blake Fox walked but the inning ended on a fly-out.

Neither side scored in the third.  Myers ran his consecutive retired batters to eight before Wunderlich reached on a HBP.  Wunderlich stole second but was stranded as a pop-out to left ended the frame.

Rodgers retired the first two hitters on fly-outs to center.  Byrd singled to right and stole second and took third on a passed ball.  The third fly-out to center followed.

In the top of the fourth, Myers retired the side in order.  He retired twelve of the last thirteen batters he faced on the day.

In the fourth, McCanna got his second hit of the day with a single to right.  Fox advanced McCanna to second with a grounder to the right side.  Fox was out second to pitcher at first.

Myers drew a full count walk.  McCanna and Myers each advanced a base as the ball got by the catcher.  Andrew Dunlap crushed a ball to deep center that probably leaves the Reck if the wind hadn't been blowing in today.  The sac-fly put Blue on top.

Williamson reached on an infield single.  Myers scored.  Hunter Kopycinski singled to left.  Williamson moved to second.  A wild pitched moved each runner up a base.  Byrd then drove home the final two runs with his third hit of the day.  This was  a hard smash past the first baseman to the right-field corner.  Leon had a double.

A grounder to third ended today's scrimmage.

Golf tomorrow.  Another scrimmage on Wednesday weather pending.

November 7, 2014 - Gray 3, Blue 2 (6 innings)

Today, the Gray team scored 3 runs in the fifth and held on for a 3-2 win in six innings.

In the second, Kevin McCanna singled up the middle.  A double play grounder to short was followed by a ground out to second to end the inning.

Blake Fox led off with a walk in the third.  Fox was forced at second on a grounder to second putting Sanjiv Gopalkrishnan  on first.  Chandler forced Gopalkrishnan at second.  Chandler stole second.  The throw from the catcher ticked off the shortstop's glove.  Chandler attempted to go to third but was cut-down on the throw from center to third.

In the fourth, Hunter Kopycinski singled to center.  A strike out followed.  Kopycinski moved to second on a ground out to third.  A pop-fly to left ended the fourth and McCarthy's outing.  McCarthy gave up no runs, 3 hits, struck out 2 and walked one in four innings.

Blake Fox pitched the first three innings for Gray.  Blake pitched three solid shutout innings.  Blake pitched to a total of 9 batters retiring the side in order in the first and third.  In the second, Leon Byrd singled.  A fly to center was the second out.  Byrd was picked off first for the third out.  Fox allowed no runs, one hitand struck out two.

Ricardo Salinas relieved Fox in the fourth.  In the fourth, Dane Wunderlich walked with one out.  Dane stole second as Salinas struck out the following batter.  With two outs, Byrd walked.  A fly to center ended the fourth.

John Williamson relieved for Blue in the fifth.  Williamson struck out the first and fourth batters of the inning but walked Salinas and Fox in between. Chandler singled to short to load the bases.  A wild pitch scored Salinas and moved Fox and Chandler up a bses each.  Kopycinski singled to center scoring the two runners.  A fly out ended the top of the fifth.  Three runs had scored to put Gray up 3-0.

Blue rallied in the bottom of the fifth.  With one out, Charlie Warren singled to left.  Grayson Lewis singled to right on a perfect hit-and-run play with Warren taking third easily.  After a strike out, Connor Teykl singled to right.  Warren scored.  Lewis would score as the throw from right sailed over the third baseman's head.

Connor moved to second.  A pop-foul to third ended the fifth.

Each pitcher retired the side in order in the sixth.

Salinas pitched 3 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 ER) on 3 hits, 2 walks, and 3 strike outs.

That strike out was the first of 10 consecutive outs.  Otto would have 2 strike outs in each of the first four innings.  A lead-off walk in the fifth broke the string.  A grounder to short erased the walk in an infield double-play.

Otto hit Chad Tatum with a pitch.  A soft liner to first ended the the fifth and the scrimmage.

Final Gray 1, Blue 1.

Williamson reached on catcher's interference.  Byrd walked.  Lewis singled to center scoring McCannaCharlie Warren tripled to right-center clearing the bases.  The inning was called due to high pitch count.

It was now 6-1 Blue.

In the fifth, the madness continued.  Dunlap walked to lead-off.  Ryan Chandler singled to right.  Dunlap to third.  Chandler to second on the throw.  Myers singled to right scoring two.  Myers took second on the throw home.  A wild pitch advanced Myers to third.

This was the last of the Owl's games against other schools for the fall.  More fall ball scrimmages will follow however.  Come out and see them scrimmage themselves.

October 15, 2014 - Gray 1, Blue 0 (3 innings)

In today's scrimmage, each of the six pitchers tossed one inning as preparation for the fall ball game versus Lamar.  Be sure to come out and enjoy this great weather and see the Owls battle the Cardinals.  Game time is 1:00 PM Saturday.

Blake Fox opened today's match versus the Gray team with a shut-out inning.  Connor Teykl had the only hit as he lined a double to the left-field corner with two outs.  Leon Byrd followed with a walk.  The inning ended on a fielder's choice grounder to second.

Fox walked one, struck-out one and allowed one hit.

Austin Orewiler also pitched a shut-out inning in the bottom of the first. although it didn't appear that was going to be the case after the first two batters reached base.  Andrew Dunlap started the inning with a single to center.  Charlie Warren followed with a bunt single.

Austin then retired the next two batters on a fly to left followed by a strike-out.  Dunlap attempted to take third on a pitch that appeared to get away from the catcher.  Brandt Frazier recovered and made the throw to third to nail Dunlap.

Orewiler allowed two hits and struck-out one.

Glenn Otto pitched the top of the second.  Otto struck-out the first batter.  Dane Wunderlich walked.  Otto struck-out the following batter.  This brought Sanjiv to the plate.  Sanjiv is a Rice Club Baseball player who is helping with catching duties in the fall.  Dane stole second.  After taking the count full, Sanjiv lined a single to center sending Dane home for the only run of the game.  His team gave him a big cheer.  Otto had his third strike-out to end the inning.

Otto allowed one run, one hit and one walk with three strike-outs.

John Williamson pitched the bottom of the second for Gray.  With one out, Fox reached on an infield error.  An around-the-horn double play erased the runner and ended the inning.  Williamson allowed no runs, no hits, no walks with no strike-outs.

Ricky Salinas pitched a shut-out third for Blue.  He retired the first two batters.  Leon Byrd dropped a single into left on a 1-2 count.  Grayson Lewis walked after Leon stole second.  A fly to right ended the rally.

Salinas gave up one hit and one walk with no strike-outs.

Ryan McCarthy shut-out Blue in the third to save the victory for Gray.   After an infield ground-out and a strike-out, Chad Tatum reached on an infield error.  The game ended on a strike-out.  Ryan struck out two.  No runs, hits, or walks.

Final was Gray (Visitors), 1 Blue (Home) 0.

See you Saturday.  Go Owls!!!

The final was Gray 2, Blue 0.

October 11, 2014 - Rice 9, Tulane 4 (14 innings)

The weather kept us waiting two hours before the first pitch was thrown at 2:01 PM.  The Rice offense made us wait until the ninth inning before taking the lead against the Green Wave.  Eventually the Rice offense pounded out 17 hits and scored 9 runs.  The pitchers kept Tulane in check until the Owls had the game well in hand.

Five Tulane pitchers held the Rice offense scoreless through seven innings. The Owls had single hits in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth.  (Singles were by Leon Byrd, Ford Stainback, Leon Byrd, Dane Myers, Ford Stainback).

Rice pitching was almost as good as Blake Fox pitched two shutout innings with 1 H and 1 K.

Austin Orewiler pitched a scoreless third.  In the fourth, Tulane started the inning with a single to center.  A fly out followed.

The runner advanced to second on a grounder to first.  Tulane then executed a perfect hit-and-run play with the runner at second scoring easily on the hit to right-center.  Another single followed.  Austin  got the third out on a called third strike.  Austin allowed 1 ER with 3 H, 1 BB, 1K.

In the fifth, Ryan McCarthy relieved Orewiler.  With two outs, Tulane doubled to left-center.  Another double followed to score a run.  Ryan got the third out on a pop-foul to first.  Ryan pitched a perfect sixth inning with 2 Ks and a ground-out..  His line was 1 ER, 2 H, 3 K.

Going into the bottom of the eighth, the score was Tulane 2 Rice 0.

Charlie Warren started the inning with a single off the pitchers glove.  He took second on a wild pitch and third on a grounder to first.  Hunter Kopycinski got the Owls on the board with a sac-fly to center.  Ford Stainback was hit-by-pitch but stranded on a fly out.

Rice was down 2-1 going to the ninth.

Ricardo Salinas pitched the 9th, 10th and 11th innings for Rice.  In the ninth, Salinas stated with a called third strike out.  An infield single to short was followed by a single to left.  The Tulane pinch-hitter worked the at-bat for 10 pitches but Salinas stayed tough and got a fielder's choice ground out.  The runners advanced to second and third.  The third out was a grounder to second.  Salinas was the only pitcher on the day to got three innings.  The tenth and eleventh were scoreless.  Salinas' line was 0 R, 3 H, 3K, 1 BB.

In the Rice ninth, Tristan Gray walked.  Connor Teykl singled when the batted ball hit Gray running to second.  Gray was out.  Connor was awarded first.  Kevin McCanna singled to left advancing Connor to second.

Ryan Chandler singled to right with Connor scoring.  Kevin taking third and Chandler second as the throw from the outfield was misplayed. Charlie Warren drove home Kevin with a ground-out to first.  Ryan moving to third.

Rice 4, Tulane 2 after 9

The Owls tacked on two more runs in the tenth.  With one out, Leon Byrd singled to center.  Tristan Gray reached on a fielder's choice grounder to first.  The first-baseman threw errantly to second with Leon going to third on the bad throw.

Teykl tripled to the right-field corner driving home two runs.  Connor was stranded as two outs followed.

Rice 6, Tulane 2 after 10.

In the eleventh, the Owls went to work again.  Charlie Warren doubled to right.  Dane Myers hit a hard liner to first for the initial out of the frame.

Tulane 4-12-2
Rice     9-17-1

October 8, 2014 - Blue 2, Gray 1 (3 innings)

It was great to be back to see my first scrimmage of the fall.  I must admit that the sauna that was Reckling Park today was a major change from the freezing temps of Memorial Stadium in Champagne, IL last Saturday.  I'll take the sauna.

Seven pitchers toed the rubber for no more than one inning each.  The scrimmage lasted three innings and about 50 minutes.

Gray posted one run off Austin Orewiler in the top of the first.  Charlie Warren singled to deep short on the first pitch.  Charlie stole second.  Dane Myers singled to center.  Charlie rounded third but returned to third on the throw home.  Dane took second on the throw.

A ground out to first followed with the runners holding position.

Khevin Brewer hit a fielder's choice grouder.  The throw home chased Charlie back to third.  Dane had advanced toward third but was out on the play.

Kevin McCanna ripped an RBI single to right to score Charlie.  A pop-out to the catcher ended the inning.

With Blake Fox pitching the first for Gray, the first batter flew out to right.

Ryan Chandler singled to second-base.  The next batter flew out to center.  Ryan must have stolen second-base at some point. I was messing with my score book and missed it. He then took third on a wild pitch.  A ground out to short cut the rally short.

Ricardo Salinas pitched a 1-2-3 second for Blue.

Ryan McCarthy pitched the second for Gray.  Kirby Taylor hit a single to right to get the inning underway.  Connor Teykl forced Kirby but advanced to second as the throw to first was wild.

An infield ground-out was the second out of the inning.  A called third strike ended the frame.

The score was 1-0 Gray going into the third inning.

Glenn Otto pitched the third for Blue.  He struck-out the side.

Tristan Gray started the third for Gray.  Hunter Kopycinski greeted him with a very deep drive to left-center.  Khevin Brewer ran it down on the warning track making a great running catch.

Chandler singled to center.  He appeared to be picked-off but the ball was dropped as he took second base.   Grayson Lewis singled Chandler home.  Lewis taking second on the throw home.

Leon Byrd followed with another single to center scoring Lewis to put Blue up 2-1.  Leon advanced to second on the attempt at home.

John Williamson relieved Tristan.  Leon took third on a ground-out to the right-side.  A fly to center ended the scrimmage.

SPRING PRACTICE (January - February 2015)
Unofficial Recaps by Roger Tower

February 10, 2015 - Gray 2, Blue 1:

It was the best day of the preseason.  An absolutely beautiful evening to get prepared for this weekend.

Gray edged Blue this evening 2-1 in 3 1/2 innings. Kevin McCanna pitched the top of the first for Blue.   With one out, Leon Byrd doubled over Ryan Chandler's glove in center-field.   Chandler ran the ball down and fired a relay throw to Chad Tatum who threw to Tristan Gray to nail Byrd for the second out of the inning.  McCanna struck-out the final batter of his one inning outing.

John Williamson pitched the bottom of the first for Gray.  Ryan Chandler singled to left.  Ryan McCarthy fired to Byrd who threw to Connor Teykl to get Chandler before he could return to first.  A ground-out to short followed.  With two outs, Ford Stainback walked.  JC Reeves doubled Ford home.  Williamson struck-out the next batter for the third out.  Williamson pitched one inning.

Willy Amador pitched the second and third innings for Blue. In the second, Hunter Kopycinski dropped a looper into center.  Hunter took second on a passed-ball.  Teykl singled up-the-middle.  Hunter scored as he beat the throw to the plate.  Teykl took second on the play at the plate.  Connor was out as he attempted to go to third.  A strikeout and ground-out to second ended the top of the second.

Amador pitched the third for Blue.  He retired the first two batters.  Grayson Lewis doubled but was stranded as the next batter was retired on strikes.

Austin Orewiler pitched the second and third innings for Gray.  He retired all six batters he faced.  He struck-out one.
