Trivia Answer:
The late Malcolm Gillis, Rice's sixth president, earned a BA and a MA from the University of Florida.  While there, he met Elizabeth Cifers and they were married after their graduations from Florida. (Thanks, Chris Kohnhorst and Mike Ross!)

On Friday, the Owls open play against the Gators in the first round of the NCAA Volleyball Championship in Dallas.

Edgard Odell Lovett, Rice’s first president, was a Princeton professor.  George Rupp, Rice’s fifth president, earned an AB in English at Princeton in 1964.  On Wednesday night, the Tigers W Basketball team defeated the Owls, 69-56, at Jadwin Gymnasium.  (Thanks, Mike Ross!)

Rice M Basketball head coach Rob Lanier spent eight seasons as associate head coach to Rick Barnes, four at Texas (2011-15) and four at Tennessee (2015-19). On Monday night, the #20 Volunteers defeated the Owls, 91-66, at the Food City Center in Knoxville.  (Thanks, Chris Kohnhorst and Mike Ross!)

John Carlos attended East Texas State (nka East Texas A&M) and won the bronze medal in the 200-meter dash at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. Tonight, Rice M Basketball hosts East Texas A&M at Tudor Fieldhouse.  (Thanks, Mike Ross!)

Interestingly, the Voice of the Owls JP Heath graduated from Texas A&M Commerce (also nka East Texas A&M) in 2000.
