On November 1, 2008, Dr. Jim Castaneda passed away at the age of 75. He served Rice for 46 years as an educator, coach and administrator. He was a Spanish professor, teaching Golden Age Spanish literature. He assisted in coaching the baseball team for 22 seasons before becoming head golf coach from 1983 to 1998. He was faculty athletics representative for the SWC, the WAC and the NCAA for 33 years. He was honored several times by Rice and a golf scholarship was established at Rice in his honor in 2001. Finally, before Rice, he played minor league baseball for one season while pursuing graduate studies at Yale.
