February 10, 2015 - Gray 2, Blue 1:
It was the best day of the preseason. An absolutely beautiful evening to get prepared for this weekend.
Gray edged Blue this evening 2-1 in 3 1/2 innings. Kevin McCanna pitched the top of the first for Blue. With one out, Leon Byrd doubled over Ryan Chandler's glove in center-field. Chandler ran the ball down and fired a relay throw to Chad Tatum who threw to Tristan Gray to nail Byrd for the second out of the inning. McCanna struck-out the final batter of his one inning outing.
John Williamson pitched the bottom of the first for Gray. Ryan Chandler singled to left. Ryan McCarthy fired to Byrd who threw to Connor Teykl to get Chandler before he could return to first. A ground-out to short followed. With two outs, Ford Stainback walked. JC Reeves doubled Ford home. Williamson struck-out the next batter for the third out. Williamson pitched one inning.
Willy Amador pitched the second and third innings for Blue. In the second, Hunter Kopycinski dropped a looper into center. Hunter took second on a passed-ball. Teykl singled up-the-middle. Hunter scored as he beat the throw to the plate. Teykl took second on the play at the plate. Connor was out as he attempted to go to third. A strikeout and ground-out to second ended the top of the second.
Amador pitched the third for Blue. He retired the first two batters. Grayson Lewis doubled but was stranded as the next batter was retired on strikes.
Austin Orewiler pitched the second and third innings for Gray. He retired all six batters he faced. He struck-out one.
After three innings, the score was tied 1-1.
Michael Rodgers pitched the fourth for Blue.
Dane Myers walked on four pitches. He stole second. Kopycinski beat out a slow roller to third. Myers to third. Hunter stole second. Teykl walked. to load the bases. Dayne Wunderlich grounded out third to first to score Myers. Hunter to third and Teykl to second. Williamson hit a fly to left. Kirby Taylor made the catch and threw home to Reeves for the tag out of Kopycinski for the final out of the day.
Gray won 2-1.
February 8, 2015 - Blue 0, Gray 0:
Austin Solecitto pitched two shut out innings for Blue. With one out, Grayson Lewis was HBP. Leon Byrd walked on four pitches. Solecitto got JC Reeves to ground a DP. Third to first.
Austin pitched a perfect second inning. No runs or hits. One walk and one hit batter.
Dane Myers pitched two shutout innings for Gray. With two outs, Warren and Gray each singled up the middle. A fly ended the first. In the second, Fox led off with a walk. He was forced at second. A grounder to short was turned into a DP. Myers allowed no runs on two hits with one walk.
Matt Ditman pitched the third for Blue. Myers singled to start the inning. Ditman picked him off. A groundout and strikeout followed. No runs on one hit and one K.
Final 0-0.

February 7, 2015 - Blue 1, Gray 0:
A beautiful spring day for a preseason scrimmage. Blue scored an unearned run to take a 1-0 win over Gray in a six inning scrimmage.
Blake Fox pitched five scoreless innings for Blue. Blake struck-out three, hit one and walked none.
Fox gave up six hits. They were a single to Grayson Lewis in the first; a single to John Williamson in the second.
In the third, Brandt Frazier led-off with a single to center. With two out, Leon Byrd reached on an infield single to short. A fielder's choice grounder to short ended the inning.
In the fifth, Khevin Brewer singled to center. After a fly-out, Ford Stainback also singled to center. Brewer was nearly forced on the throw from center to second. Brewer took third on a pop foul out to first. The fifth and Fox's outing ended on a ground out to third.
Ricky Salinas pitched five innings with only an unearned run scoring off him. Salinas struck-out four, walked none and allowed five singles.
Tristan Gray singled up-the-middle with two out. A line drive to right ended the frame.
In the second, Charlie Warren reached on an infield single to short. Two outs followed. Willy Amador singled to center as Warren reached third. Amador stole second. The throw to second sailed into center. Warren scored. A come-backer was the third out.
Dane Myers and Gray had back-to-back singles with one out in the third. They were stranded as a strikeout and fly out followed.
Salinas finished the game with two perfect innings to give him eight straight outs to end his outing.
After five, it was Blue 1, Gray 0.
Michael Rodgers pitched the sixth for each side.
He retired the Gary side in order.
Against Blue he hit Hunter Kopycinski with a pitch with one out. Hunter was out trying to steal with a late throw to second. A fly ball out to left ended the day.
Rodgers pitched 2 innings with no hits, no runs, no strikeouts and one HBP.
Final was Blue 1 Gray 0.
February 6, 2015 - Blue 4, Gray 1:

February 6, 2015 - Blue 4, Gray 1:
pitched two shut out innings for Blue. With one out, was HBP. walked on four pitches. got to ground a DP. Third to first.
Glen Otto pitched 5 innings for Blue.
In the third, Gray rallied for one run on John Williamson's single with one out. Williamson stole second. Brewer walked. After a fly out, Grayson Lewis and Leon Byrd walked. Byrd getting the RBI. A pop foul out ended the third. Otto pitched perfect innings in the other four innings.
Ryan McCarthy pitched into the fifty. Ryan retired the first 8 batters. With one in the third, he walked Rick Salinas. A fielder's choice grounder ended the inning.
In the fourth, Kopycinski reached on an infield single. Warren hit a ground rule double to left. Kopycinski out trying to take home on pitch that got away from the catcher.
In the fifth, Ryan gave up a single to Myers up the middle. Fox tripled to deep right center scoring Myers. Fox scored on a wild pitch. After two K's, Chandler walked. He stole second. Taylor doubled to right scoring Chandler. The inning call on pitch count.
Amador pitched the sixth and seventh for Blue. Byrd singled. Three outs followed. Amador pitched a perfect seventh. He had 2 Ks.
Williamson pitched the final two innings for Gray. He walked one and Warren reached on a bunt single. Two Ks and a fly out ended the inning. In the seventh, Tatum led off with a triple and scored on Amador's fielder's choice. He had two more Ks. For his outing, he struck out 4.
Ditman pitched the eighth for Blue. With one out, Byrd singled. Reeves threw him out trying to steal. An unassisted grounded to first ended the scrimmage. Ditman struck out one.
Final Blue 4, Gray 1.
February 4, 2015 - Gray 0, Blue 0:
Nil-nil. Zip-zip. Nada-nada. The scrimmage was a scoreless draw today.
Kevin McCanna pitched 5.1 shutout innings for Blue. He allowed four singles, walked two and struck-out six.
He retired the side in order in the first, third and fourth innings. He faced three in the fifth when he picked off Dane Myers after Dane led off with a single to right-center.
In the second inning, McCanna looked to be in deep trouble as Kirby Taylor singled to lead-off. Charlie Warren and Myers followed with walks. The bases were loaded with no outs.
McCanna struck out the next two batters. He made a nice play to retire Ricky Salinas at first on a slow chopper toward third.
In the sixth, Salinas singled to center. McCanna struck-out the next batter. Ryan Chandler singled to center. The inning was called as McCanna's pitch count was over his limit.
Austin Orewiler pitched for the Gray. Austin retired the first fourteen batters he faced. With two outs in the fifth, Dayne Wunderlich singled to left. A come-back grounder ended the fifth.
In the sixth, Orewiler hit Khevin Brewer with a pitch. A fly ball out followed. Ford Stainback and Grayson Lewis drew back-to-back walks. Leon Byrd ripped a ball to third. Dane Myers caught the liner and stepped on third to double-up Brewer.
Orewiler pitched six innings shutout innings. He allowed one hit, walked two, hit one and struck-out one.
Trevor Teykl pitched the seventh for Blue. Trevor retired the first two batters before hitting Taylor and Warren with pitches. with a 3-1 count on Myers, the inning was called.
No runs, no hits, one strikeout and two HBP.
Matt Ditman pitched a scoreless seventh for Gray. With one out, Connor Teykl walked on a full count. Dayne Wunderlich singled to center. His second hit of the scrimmage.
John Williamson dropped a single into right, Warren charged the ball ball and fired home to erase Teykl at the plate. Wunderlich to third and Warren to second on the throw home. A strikeout ended the threat.
Austin Solecitto pitched the top of the eighth for Blue.
Austin struck-out the first batter, and retired the second batter on a grounder to short. Chad Tatum walked on a 3-2 pitch. Salinas hit a low fly to right that got lost in the lights and bounced off the fielder's glove.
Tatum raced to third. Salinas rounded first. The ball was cut-off and Salinas was out trying to return to first.
That ended the scrimmage in a 0-0 tie.
Wunderlich was the only batter to get two hits. Stainback was held hitless for the first time in preseason.
Taylor made a nice defensive catch on Grayson Lewis's fly in the first inning. Byrd a great play on Tatum's grounder in the fifth.
Let's do it again tomorrow.
January 30, 2015 - Gray 9, Blue 3:
A little chilly today but the batters heated it up as Gray beat Blue 9-3. Gray has won 4 of the 5 scrimmages played so far.
In the top of the first, Gray broke on top with three runs off Ricky Salinas.
Ford Stainback ran his hit streak to 5 games when he led off with a single to left. He reached second on a grounder off the pitcher's glove that was fielded by Tristan Gray who retired Grayson Lewis at first. Leon Byrd walked. Stainback took third on the fourth ball wild pitch. Leon held at first. JC Reeves singled to right. Stainback scored, Byrd to second. Connor Teykl grounded to second. All runners were safe as the ball was mishandled. Byrd to third, Reeves to second and Teykl reached first. Dayne Wunderlich grounded-out third to first. Byrd scored. Reeves and Teykl each moved up a base. John Williamson reached on an infield single to first. Reeves scored. Teykl to third. Williamson was forced out at second on a grounder to second.
Blake Fox pitched the bottom of the first for Gray. With one out, Hunter Kopycinski was HBP. Tristan Gray followed with a single to left. Hunter to third. Kirby Taylor drove home Hunter with a ground-out to third. Gray to second. A grounder to short ended the inning.
After one inning, it was Gray 3, Blue 1.
Gray added four more runs in the second. With one out, Brandt Frazier singled to center. Stainback followed with a Texas-leaguer single to left-center. Frazier to second. Grayson Lewis walked to load the bases. Leon Byrd cleared the bases with a triple to deep center. Byrd scored on Reeves grounder to short. A pop-foul out ended the inning.
Fox retired the side in order in the second.
Salinas pitched a scoreless third. Dayne Wunderlich walked. He was forced on a grounder to second. Williamson reached base. He stole second and scampered to third on a wild pitch. A strikeout ended the stanza.
Fox pitched a very similar third for Gray. Salinas walked. He was forced by Chandler. Chandler stole second but was picked-off trying to steal third. An infield grounder ended the inning.
The line for Salinas was 3 innings with 6 hits and 7 runs (5 ER). He had one strikeout with three walks.
Ryan McCarthy relieved for Blue in the fourth. He pitched three shutout innings.
Byrd singled in the fourth. John Williamson singled in the fifth and Stainback walked in the sixth. McCarthy struck out three.
Fox pitched the fourth and allowed two runs. Taylor reached on an infield single. Charlie Warren was HBP. After a strikeout, Chad Tatum also was HBP to load the bases. Kevin McCanna singled to right to drive home Taylor and Warren. A fielder's choice grounder ended the fourth.
In four innings, Fox gave up three runs on three hits. He struck-out three, hit three, and walked one.
After four, it was Gray 7, Blue 3.
Glenn Otto relieved for Gray in the fifth. He pitched three scoreless innings.
Otto hit Chandler with a pitch in the fifth.
Dane Myers walked with two outs in the sixth.
Salinas singled to center with two outs in the seventh. Reeves picked him off first from his catcher's spot to end the inning.
Michael Rodgers pitched the seventh for Blue.
Byrd and Reeves were each HBP. Teykl singled up -the-middle. Byrd scored. Reeves was out as he attempted to take third. Teykl took second on the throw.
With two out, John Williamson singled to center. Teykl scored. Willy Amador walked, Williamson to second. The inning died as Rodgers struck-out the next batter.
After seven, the score was Gray up 9-3.
Austin Solecitto pitched a perfect eighth for Blue. He struck out two.
Final was Gray 9, Blue 3.
Williamson had three hits.
Stainback and Byrd each had two hits.
The following players each had one hit: Reeves, Teykl, Frazier,Gray, Taylor and Salinas.
Byrd had three RBI. Reeves, Williamson and McCanna had two RBI each. Taylor and Teykl had an RBI apiece.

January 29, 2015 - Gray 5, Blue 2:
The clouds that were around early in the afternoon disappeared making for another beautiful day for preseason baseball.
The Gray team beat the Blue today 5-2 in 8 innings.
Kevin McCanna (Gray) and Austin Orewiler (Blue) hooked up for a great pitching exhibition through the first part of the scrimmage.
Orewiler gave up three singles in the first but held Gray scoreless. With one out, Hunter Kopycinski singled up-the-middle. After a strikeout, Kirby Taylor singled to center. Hunter stopped at second. Charlie Warren singled to right. Hunter was out trying to score from second to end the inning.
Austin allowed a two out double to Dayne Wunderlich in the second. A grounder to short ended the frame. Austin retired the side in the fourth and fifth innings.
Orewiler pitched four innings and allowed no runs on four hits. He walked none and struck out five.
Kevin McCanna allowed a lead-off single to Ford Stainback. Kevin retired the next fifteen batters. McCanna pitched five innings and allowed no runs with the one hit. He struck out two and walked none.
Matt Ditman relieved Orewiler in the fifth. With two out in the fifth, Dane Myers singled up-the-middle. Dane reached second on an error during a failed pick-off attempt. Ryan Chandler beat out a grounder to short for an infield hit, On the play to first, Myers was out at the plate as he tried to score from second.
In the sixth, Kopycinski singled to right. Tristan Gray followed with a slow grounder to short. With no play at first, the attempted force play at second was also late. Gray got an infield single. After a fly out, Charlie Warren grounded to first. Gray was forced at second. The return throw to first was wild and allowed Kopycinski to score. Warren took second on the error. He took third on a pitch that bounced away from the catcher. A strikeout ended the inning. Ditman went two innings giving up one run (unearned) on four hits, one strikeout and no walks.
Trevor Teykl relieved McCanna in the sixth. Trevor continued the string of shut-out innings as he faced three batters in the sixth and seventh..
After a lead-off walk to Wunderlich, Trevor got a break when Wunderlich was doubled-up at first on a fly out to center. Kirby Taylor made a nice catch in left to end the sixth.
In the seventh, Ford Stainback walked with one out. After a fly out, Ford was picked off first.
Trevor pitched two innings and allowed no runs and walked two.
Willy Amador pitched the seventh and eighth innings for Blue.
In the seventh, Chad Tatum lead-off with a walk. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Ryan Chandler hit a ball up the middle. Leon Byrd made a nice play to get to the ball. When he turned and threw to first, the ball sailed. Chandler got an infield hit and reached second on the errant throw.
Tatum scored on the error. Hunter Kopycinski followed with the first home-run of the preseason. A shot to the left-field power alley. Two runs scored. Tristan Gray tripled to right on a ball that got lost in the lights. Gray scored on Kirby Taylor's single to center. The inning was called at that time.
Amador pitched a perfect eighth.
Amador pitched 1.1 innings giving up 4 runs on 3 hits and a walk.
John Williamson pitched the eighth for Gray.
With one out, JC Reeves doubled to the wall in left. Connor Teykl walked. Wunderlich walked. A strikeout was the second out. Ricky Salinas singled home two with a single to right. Wunderlich took third. A final strikeout ended the scrimmage.
Williamson pitched one inning and allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Hunter Kopycinski had three hits with a HR and 2 RBI. Chandler, Gray and Taylor each had two hits. Taylor had an RBI. Gray a triple.
Tatum had one hit, a double. Myers and Warren each had one single.
Stainback had a single. Reeves a double and Salinas a two RBI single.
The weather should hold for another scrimmage tomorrow afternoon. See you there.
January 26, 2015 - Gray 1, Blue 0:
Gray trips Blue 1-0 today. It was a brief 2 1/2 innings scrimmage.
Michael Rodgers pitcher three innings for the Blue squad. He gave up one unearned run on one hit. He walked three batters and hit two others. In the first inning, Tristan Gray drew a one out walk. Blake Fox doubled down the right field line sending Gray to third.
JC Reeves hit a fly ball to left-center. Ryan Chandler threw a perfect strike home and Hunter Kopycinski applied a great tag to retire Gray.
In the second, Rodgers walked one with two outs. Rodgers retired the final batter on an unassisted grounder to first.
Meanwhile John Williamson threw 15 strikes in his 20 total pitches in two innings. He faced the minimum of six batters. Williamson struck out four. Ford Stainback singled up the middle. Williamson picked him off first for the third out in the initial frame.
In the top of the third, Rodgers hit Chad Tatum with a pitch to start the inning. Tatum went to second second on a failed catcher's pick-off at first. Dane Wunderlich grounded to short but the ball was booted allowing Tatum to score.
Wunderlich was caught stealing. This was the fourth runner caught stealing in the preseason by Kopycinski. Reeves reached on a HBP. Fox walked. A grounder to short forced Reeves at third to end the scrimmage.
The final was Gray 1, Blue 0.
January 25, 2015 - Gray 4, Blue 1:
Another great day for baseball. Gray beat Blue today 4-1 in 7 innings.
Glenn Otto wound up the winning pitcher despite issuing 7 walks in 2.1 innings. Three of the walks were cut down by Hunter Kopycinski as Blue attempted to steal second. Another runner was cut down at the plate on a relay from center to short to the catcher.
Otto allowed only one hit and struck out one in his outing.
Gray scored one run in the second off Ricardo Salinas. Salinas pitched a perfect first inning and retired the first batter in the second. Connor Teykl then singled to right. Dane Wunderlich forced Teykl at second. Dane then stole second and scored on John Williamson's single to center. Williamson was out trying to go to second.
In the third, Willy Amador singled to lead-off the third. The inning ended on a Gray to Tatum to Fox double play.
Salinas pitched 3 innings, yielding 1 run on 3 hits with one strikeout.

Trevor Teykl closed out the bottom of the third the for Gray team getting the last two outs.
Ryan McCarthy pitched innings 4, 5 and 6 for Blue.The first three batters he faced reached base. Grayson Lewis walked on 5 pitches. Leon Byrd blooped a single to center. Lewis holding at second. Hunter Kopycinski reached on a squibbler toward the mound that neither the catcher nor the pitcher could field.
This loaded the bases. Connor Teykl hit a sac-fly to deep center to scoring Lewis. Byrd advanced to third. The next batter struck-out. Byrd scored on the attempted pick-off at first base. A come-backer to McCarthy ended the inning.
Gray leads 3-0 now.
Trevor Teykl pitched scoreless ball in the 4th and 5th. Trevor pitched 2.2 innings with no runs or hits. He struck-out one and hit one batter.
McCarthy held Gray scoreless in the 5th and 6th innings. He allowed a two out single to Ford Stainback in the fifth.
McCarthy pitched 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with two strike-outs and one walk.
Amador pitched the final two innings for Gray. Ryan Chandler greeted him with a triple to deep center. Kirby Taylor singled to center with one out. A fly out to center followed for the second out. Taylor was caught stealing for the third out. With a 2-2 count on the batter, Amador was allowed to continue pitching. A called third strike ended the inning.
Austin Solecitto pitched the top of the seventh for Blue.
Wunderlich singled off the third baseman's glove. Williamson sacrificed him to second. Amador singled Wunderlich home. This time the inning ended on a Tatum to Gray to Fox double play.
Solecitto pitched one inning allowing one run on 2 hits.
It was now 4-1 Gray.
Amador allowed a lead-off single to Kevin McCanna. That was followed by three straight fly-ball outs to center.
Amador pitched 2.1 innings giving up one run on three hits and striking out two.
Amador was the only hitter to collect two hits today.
In my haste to get my recap out before the men's basketball game last night, I neglected to mention Khevin Brewer had two singles to go 2 for 2 on the day.
We'll do it again tomorrow. It'll be a later start than today.
January 24, 2015 - Blue 4, Gray 2:
There are times when one must just wait for the Houston weather to come around before you get in the first preseason scrimmage. Today was gorgeous.
Blue beat Gray 4-2 with Jon DuPlantier leading the way with two perfect innings. He was followed to the mound by Austin Orewiler and Matt Ditman.
Blake Fox started for Gray giving up 3 earned runs (4 runs total) on 5 hits in 3 innings. Kevin McCanna relieved throwing 3 shutout innings. He gave up 1 hit and retired the last 7 batters he faced.
Blue got on the board in the second with back-to-back doubles by Connor Teykl and Dane Wunderlich. Wunderlich moved to third on a grounder to first and scored on a passed ball.
Blue added two more runs in the third. Khevin Brewer and Ford Stainback got the inning started with a single apiece. Grayson Lewis forced Brewer at third for the first out. Stainback and Lewis pulled off a double steal.
Leon Byrd walked to load the bases. Hunter Kopycinski drove home Stainback with a sac-fly to right. Lewis taking third. Connor Teykl got his second hit of the day with an RBI single to left. A force out at second ended the inning.
Orewiler pitched to 3 batters in the third getting out of the inning on a 6-4-3 double play.
In the fourth, Gray scored 2 runs off Orewiler. With one out, Blake Fox singled up-the-middle. Fox took second on a wild pitch. Charlie Warren walked, Kirby Taylor reached on a force-out at second. Fox to third.
Tristan Gray singled to right-center. Fox scored and Taylor took second. JC Reeves singled to center with Taylor scoring. JC was forced at second to end the inning.
Orewiler pitched a 1-2-3 fifth.
