In the fall of 1975, Rice played a NCAA level short softball season. Future Houston mayor Annise Parker ’78 played shortstop or first base on the team. The team went 0-4. On May 4, 2004, Chris “Gritman” Kolkhorst, who was a member of the 2003 College World Series team, was awarded his Rice diploma at a special ceremony on the field at Reckling Park by former Rice president Malcolm Gillis.
