On January 2, 1950, Tobin Rote quarterbacked Rice to a 27-13 Cotton Bowl win over North Carolina. As a pro, he became the only quarterback to win both NFL (Detroit, 1957) and AFL (San Diego, 1963) championships as the starter. He is a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2011. In the fall of 1975, Rice played a NCAA level short softball season. Future Houston mayor Annise Parker ’78 played shortstop or first base on the team. The team went 0-4. On May 4, 2004, Chris “Gritman” Kolkhorst, who was a member of the 2003 College World Series team, was awarded his Rice diploma at a special ceremony on the field at Reckling Park by former Rice president Malcolm Gillis.
