On another beautiful fall afternoon, the Blue team used Steven Sultzbaugh's three RBI to beat Gray and Anthony Rendon's two RBI. Rendon staked Gray to an early 2-0 lead on a two run HR in the top of the first. Blue got one back when Sultzbaugh doubled after two walks. Fuda tied it with a sac-fly. Mozingo got his first AB of the fall.
The score remained tied until Sultzbaugh homered to right after Comerota had reached on a single.

That was the final Blue 4- Gray 2.

Blue got two HRs from Michael Fuda (a solo shot to right and a three run blast off the TV tower in center). The other Blue run scored on Natale's double following a walk to Simmons.

I'm sure Ernie Banks would have wanted to play two today as the weather was perfect. The RBI Club BBQ was also great. Thanks to all who helped put it together.
The Gray pitchers of Cingrani, Anagnostou, Fazio and Evers shut-out Blue and held them to two singles while striking out seven and walking four. The Gray team scored nine runs on fourteen hits.
With Simmons starting for the Blue team, Ratterree and Hague hit back to back doubles to start the game and get in one run in the first. An infield single by Hague and walks to Gonzales and Rendon, a throwing error by the pitcher, a wild pitch then a sac-fly scored two in the third and made it three to nothing.
Jared Rogers followed in the fourth. The Gray hitters got to him in a hurry. Perrott singled. After a fly out by Natale, Ratterree singled. Hague tripled over Sultzbaugh and scored when the relay was misplayed. Gonzales followed with a HR down the right-field line. Seven to nothing after four.
Rogers settled in and gave up no runs in the fifth and sixth.
Duffey came on in the seventh. Fuda singled to left. Moved to second on a hit-and-run. Perrott doubled him home.
After a scoreless eighth, the Blue scored one more in the ninth on McDowell's HR to right-center.

McDowell and Benak pitch three scoreless innings each and Gonzales rips four straight singles and Rendon gets his first HR of the fall to lead the Blue team over the Gray 5-2.
Pitchers for Blue were McDowell, Benak and Harwood. Innings were 3,3, and 1. Pitchers for Gray were Chargois, Hahn and Gray. Again innings were 3,3, and 1.
McDowell, Benak and Gray gave up no runs in their turns. Chargois gave up 3 in the first; Hahn two in the fifth. Harwood gave up two in the seventh (one earned).
In a quick seven inning game that ended just as the rains began to fall, Blue scored three in the first on Ratterree's double followed by a walk to Hague. Gonzales singled to right to score Ratterree. Rick was caught stealing third. Rendon and McDowell walked to load the bases. Rathjen drove home two with a single to left.
Blue scored two in the fifth on the third single of the day by Gonzales and Rendon's HR. A drive going over the wall in right-field.
Gray scored two in the top of the seventh when Sultzbaugh walked with one out. Manuel singled. Spurlin doubled home Sultzbaugh. Chargois walked loading the bases. Crain hit a short line drive to center. Two outs. An error plated Manuel.

At times, each pitcher threw effectively. There were, however, four innings in which at least three runs scored.
Gray broke on top with a run in the second on Rendon's double (Hague pinch ran for him). Rick stole second and scored on Diego's throwing error. Gray would add four more in the third on a triple by Natale; Ratterree's two run HR; HR by Hague and back to back doubles by Gonzales and Rendon. That made it 5-0 Gray.
Blue answered with four runs in the bottom of the third. Simmons hit a flare to right for a single. Perrott doubled over Natale in deep center. Comerota singled to left to score Simmons. Perrott scored when Maxwell bobbled the ball in left. Chargois walked. A wild pitch put runners at second and third. Rathjen followed with a two run single to center.
Evers (Blue) relieved Wright and Fazio (Gray) relieved Spurlin. Each worked two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Fazio allowed one single with Evers walking the first batter he faced. All three of the strikeouts Evers had were foul-tip Ks that Seastrunk hung onto.
Haynes took over for Evers in the sixth and Gonzales relieved Fazio.
Haynes had a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth.
Gonzales struggled, allowing three runs on a single to Seastrunk, a walk to McDowell, a double by Fuda scoring one and putting two runners in scoring position. A passed ball scored McDowell and moved Fuda to third. Crain walked. Simmons hit a slow roller to first and was tagged out with Fuda scoring. Crain got hung up between second and third and nearly got back to second by apparently giving himself up and then trying to outrun Rendon back to second. Hague applied the tag for the out. Score after six was 7-5 Blue.
Gray scored one off Haynes in the seventh on a walk to Natale and Ratterree's double to left-center.
Gonzales pitched much better in the seventh with the lead-off man reaching on an error. A fielder's choice followed. He got Chargois on a strike-out and Rathjen to fly to center.
Gray rallied in the top of the eight with a single by Manuel (Craig has a hit in all but one scrimmage). An error put Gonzales-Luna on base. He was erased on a ground ball DP. Manuel moving to third. Spurlin singled home a run. Natale walked. A wild pitch pushed the runners into scoring position and Ratterree singled them home. That gave Michael five RBI for the day. Ratterree was caught stealing to end the inning.
Gonzales had a 1-2-3 eighth and struck out the last two batters he faced. The coaches were working with him on his delivery between innings and after the game. he was definitely better in the last two innings.
The final was 9-7.

Triple: Natale

Unnofficial stats through 10/24
Players were going around the bases so often I was afraid they were going to get dizzy. It was like a Merry-Go-Round at a county fair. None of the pitchers could keep the other team from scoring at sometime during their appearance. Everyone but Rathjen and Spurlin got at least one hit on the day. Each contributed by reaching on an error and each scored two runs.

Trailing 1-0 when the game was delayed for a brief shower, the Gray team rallied on Trey Crain's three run HR and his two RBI singles to beat the Blue team 6-4.
The pitching dominated early with Cingrani striking out five and Boogie striking out three for the Gray team. Wall and Chargois held the Gray team scoreless in the two innings each pitched.
Travis Wright had pitched a scoreless fifth and retired Gonzales and gave up a single to Manuel before facing Maxwell. With the count full, the game was delayed. After the delay, his first pitch was a ball, walking Maxwell. Crain then hit the next pitch over the left-field fence for three runs. This gave Gray a 3-1 lead.
Gray added a run in the seventh as Sultzbaugh reached on a throwing error, advanced to second on a grounder to first, took third on a WP, and scored on Crain's single to center.
McDowell opened the bottom of the seventh for Blue with a HR to right-center. Gary 4, Blue 2.
In the eighth inning, Reckling came on to pitch for the Blue and Fazio for the Gray. Blue rallied to tie it at 4 in the bottom of the eight on Ratterree's single, Seastrunk's RBI double, and a SF by Rendon.
Gray rallied to go back ahead as Sultzbaugh reached on another infield error. He advanced to third on a single through the middle by Gonzales. Abe taking second on the play. Maxwell got the run home on a slow grounder to the right-side. Another single by Crain plated the final run.
Fazio negotiated the bottom of the ninth giving up only a one-out single to Fuda. Fazio struck-out Ratterree to end the game.

Double-Seastrunk, McDowell
SB: Crain
Crain had a three-hit day with five RBI. Two-hit days were accomplished by Gonzales, Simmons, Seastrunk, and McDowell. McDowell had two RBI.
It should be noted that Evers and Haynes played in the outfield today.
Also Chargois switched teams and took over at second base for Gonzales-Luna after Daniel was hit-by-pitch in the sixth.

Blue scored early and often to capture today's scrimmage 12-2. The big offensive output was backed by Tyler Duffey's four perfect innings. With seven runs in the first and four more in the fourth and the Blue pitchers retiring the first 16 batters, the only suspense was if the Gray team could get a hit. Chase McDowell finally broke up the no-no with a single to right in the seventh.
Three-hit days were turned in by Gonzales-Luna and Rathjen. Two-hit days by Comerota, Sultzbaugh, Seastrunk, Crain and Maxwell.
Extra base-hits today were provided by Seastrunk (HR and double), Crain (double), Sultzbaugh (triple), Gonzales-Luna (double), and Hague (double). SBs were taken by Hague, Sultzbaugh, Crain and Comerota. Rathjen was caught stealing.
Spurlin left the game early when Michael Fuda hit a line shot off his right elbow/forearm that ricocheted to Rendon for an out. Will Maxwell also got hit in the helmet with a pitch. He remained in the game thanks to the protection provided by the helmet.

The highlight of the day was Fazio making his first appearance of the fall in the bottom of the tenth and striking out the side. Evers also made his fall debut and faced the minimum by inducing a double-play to end his inning of work.
Blue broke on top with back-to-back HRs by Spurlin and Fazio in the bottom of the first. Hague got one back for Gray with his third HR of the fall. Gray tied it at two on a single by Chargois, a WP, a throwing error by Seastrunk and a Ratterree SF.
After the cheers for Fazio, Crain received a big cheer with his two out double to drive home two in the bottom of the sixth. His teammates were cheering him on to third but he was thrown out easily. That put the Blue team up 4-2. Blue padded the lead with four runs in the eighth as they batted around. Spurlin's single, leaving him a double short of the cycle, got the inning going. RBI doubles by Seastrunk and Fuda pushed the lead to four. Comerota'a two RBI single made it 8-2. Gray scored three in the ninth when Perrott was hit by a pitch, Natale singled and Hague doubled them home. He scored on a single to right-center by Gonzales.
Pitchers for Gray were: Wall (2 innings, 0 R, 1 H, 1 W), Gray (3 innings, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 W), Benak (2 innings, 0 R, 2 H, 3 K, 1 W), Evers (1 inning, 0 R, 1 W), Haynes (2 innings, 3 R, 4 H, 2 K). On an absolutely beautiful day for a fall baseball game, the Blue team got off to an 8-1 lead and won 9-4. Ratterree reached base 5 consecutive times with two HRs and a double sandwiched between two walks. Michael scored four runs and had 3 RBI.
It was a day for strange hits. With the wind blowing out, there was an infield pop single that landed without a glove being put on it; a bad hop single off the glove of Gonzales; a double falling just out of reach of a diving left-fielder. The first of Ratterree's HR just cleared the wall with the help of the wind.
Blue lead 8-1 after six innings, scoring one in the first on Rendon's RBI double, two in the third on back to back HRs by Ratterree and Hague, another run in the fourth scored after Rathjen doubled and scored on an error, two more in the fifth when Ratterree doubled and scored when Chargois singled. Chargois scored on an error at first. Ratterree hit a two run HR in the sixth.
Gray had scored a single run in the top of the sixth when Comerota doubled and scored on Seatrunk's single to center. Gray tried to make a game of it with three runs in the seventh on a single by Spurlin, a double by Gonzales, and RBI singles by Natale (2 RBI) and Comerota (1 RBI). In the eighth, Gray needed a hit with runners on second and third to cut the lead to two but could not get it.
Blue scored an additional run in the bottom of the ninth on an infield hit by Chargois, a walk to Rendon and a couple of wild pitches around a fly to deep center.
Six pitchers went 3 innings each. Gray: Cingrani (3 R, 3 H, 4 K, 1 W), Harwood (5 R, 3 ER, 8 H, 1 K), Reckling (1 R, 3 H, 5 K, 2 W). Blue: Rogers (0 R, 1 H, 2 K), McDowell (1 R, 3 H, 1 K), McNair (3 R, 6 H, 1 K).
Extra base hits:
HR: Ratterree - 2, Hague -1
Doubles: One each by Ratterree, Rendon, Rathjen, McDowell, Perrott, Comerota, Manuel, Spurlin, Gonzales.
SBs: Hague-1 Ratterree-1, Chargois-2.

On what we hope is the last of the hot and humid weather, the hitters were smacking the ball all afternoon. Not all found gaps but a lot were hit with authority. In all, there were three HRs (Manuel, Hague and Perrott). There were also six doubles (Sultzbaugh-2, Comerota, Chargois, Natale, Spurlin). There were no triples as Sultzbaugh was cut down trying to stretch one of his doubles into a triple. SBs were taken by Ratterree, Hague, Rathjen, Sultzbaugh and Natale. Gonzales-Luna was picked-off at first.
The game was close through the first six innings. Each team scored a run in the first. Manuel hit a 330.5' drive down the left-field line for his second HR of the fall. Ratterre reached on an error, stole second, and scored on Seastrunk's single to left-center. Blue went up 3-1 in the second inning on Perrott's single and Natale's double. Maxwell's SF scored Perrott and Spurlin doubled home Natale.
In the top of the third, Comerota doubled to left-center and Gonzales-Luna drove Jimmy home with a single to left. Hague's first pitch HR in the bottom of the inning put Blue back up by two (4-2).
Sultzbaugh hit his first double leading off the fourth and scored later on a FC. Three walks and a WP tied it at 4 each in the top of the sixth. Perrott hit a ball to the top of the hill in deep left to put Blue up for good (5-4). Blue would score two more in the eight on a double by Chargois, a balk, a FC, an error, and a SF (7-4).
All pitchers threw three innings today. For Gray: Wright (4 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 1 W), Simmons (1 R, 2 H, 1 K, 1 W), and Fant (2 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 K). For Blue: Duffey (2 R, 3 H, 2 K), Hahn (2 R, 1 H, 3 K, 3 W), and Spurlin ( 0 R, 3 H, 2 W). Note that two balks were called on Fant and one on Hahn.

Three pitchers were used by the Blue team. J. T. Chargois (0 R, 3 H, 2 K), Will Gray (2 R, 4 H, 1 BB) and Abe Gonzales (3 R, 2 H, 3 K, 2 HBP) each pitched three innings in the Blue win today. Four pitchers took the mound for the Gray team. Boogie Anagnostou (1 R, 3 H, 4 K) pitched 3 innings with Taylor Wall (2 R, 3 H, 1 K), Andrew Benak (4 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 1 K) and Zack Harwood (1 R, 2 H) throwing 2 innings each.
Each team had lots of hitting stars. For Gray, Sultzbaugh, McDowell and Simmons each had 2 hits. Extra-base hits for Gray were a HR and double by Simmons and a double by Maxwell.
For the Blue team, Ratterree, Rendon and Chargois each had 3 hits. Hague had 2 hits. Extra-base hits were contributed by Ratterree (a lead-off triple in the bottom of the first), Rendon had a lead-off double in the fourth. Hague and Chargois each had a double.
Gonzales-Luna, Ratterree, Hague and Chargois each stole a base. The following were caught stealing or picked-off once each: Chargois and Ratterree.

The Volleyball match tonight was very exciting with four close sets. The Owls won 3-1. Hopefully it helped Joyce get over the football game.
The baseball scrimmage ended with Gray leading 5-3. Note that Blue did not bat in the bottom of the ninth after giving up their 3-1 lead in the top half of the inning.
Today's scrimmage had the pitchers going three innings each with the exception of Jeremy Fant (2 innings). For the Blue team, Travis Wright pitched to 9 batters in his three innings (2 walks, 1 K, no hits or runs); Tyler Duffey allowed 1 run on 3 hits and 3 walks and 2 Ks. Kevin Hahn pitched 2 solid innings but ran into trouble in the ninth. His totals for the three innings were 4 runs, 5 hits including 2 HRs, 6 walks, and 2 Ks. For the Gray team, Doug Simmons pitched 3 scoreless innings allowing 3 hits, walking four, and striking out three. The Blue team broke on top with a first inning RBI from Jeremy Rathjen, scoring Steven Sultzbaugh. Unfortunately for the Blue team, the Gray pitchers would shut them out for the next 5 innings.
The Gray team took the lead for good in the top of the second on a monster HR off the bat of Tyler Spurlin. The shot landed on top of the left-field hill. I picked the ball up on my way home. Rendon was on base with one of his three consecutive walks for the day. The Gray would tally two more runs in the third on four straight singles and a walk off J. T. Chargois. J. T. got out of the inning on a 1-2-3 DP grounder and a strike-out. Will Gray pitched two shut-out innings. Andrew Benak pitched the seventh against the Gray team, giving up two runs on Rick Hague's double.
For the Gray team, Gonzales, Harwood, and McNair each pitched two innings. I had the run unearned in the first when Sultzbaugh was ruled safe at second after an initial out call and then the ball popped out of the tag glove and he was called safe.
Gonzales allowed 3 hits, the unearned run, and one K. Harwood was perfect for his six batters. Holt McNair allowed one double in his two innings.
The Blue pitchers were Wall, Chargois, Gray (2 innings each), and Benak (1 inning). Wall allowed 2 runs, 1 hit, 2 walks, and 1 K. Chargois allowed 2 runs, 4 hits, 1 walk, and 2 Ks. Gray did not give up a run, he allowed 1 hit, 1 walk and had 1 K. Benak allowed 2 runs, 2 hits, no walks and 1 K.
The offensive star was Rick Hague with 3 RBI, a double and a single. Ratterree and Manuel had 2 singles each. Spurlin had the two run HR. Gonzales had a single and Rendon walked three times.
The Blue got a single apiece from Comerota, Rathjen and Crain. Simmons had a double.

PS There will be a delay in posting Friday results as I will be attending the VB and soccer games after the intrasquad.
The pitching trio of Rogers, Wright, and Haynes shut-out the Gray team to give the Blue team a 1-0 win.
Rendon drove home the winning run in the first inning on a sac-fly following two walks and 3 stolen bases to get Blue ahead without the benefit of a hit.
Rogers, Wright, and Haynes each gave up 2 hits. Rogers and Haynes each walked 1 with Wright getting the only K.
The Gray pitchers were nearly as good. Reckling walked two batters in the first but allowed only the one run. He walked a total of four, struck out one and gave up just one hit. McDowell faced the minimum of six batters allowing just one hit. That runner was erased on an attempted steal. No walks or Ks. Fant also faced only six batters. Natale laced his first pitch into center for a single. On a hit-and-run play, Simmons lined a ball to Gonzales-Luna in right. Natale had rounded second on his way to third when the ball was caught. He had to retouch second and return to first. Daniel fired the ball to first but Rathjen couldn't come up with the throw. Nick touched first and started back to second. The catcher (Perrott) was backing-up the play and fired to second to cut down Nick. Fant retired the next four in order.
Sultzbaugh had a great day with two hits and a walk in his three plate appearances. He also made two great catches in center. Chargois also had 2 hits for the Gray team. Perrott had a double.
Rendon had the big sac-fly in the first. Maxwell, Manuel, and Natale each had a single. That was it.
PS I will be leaving the scrimmage early tomorrow to attend the VB game between Rice and Houston tomorrow night.
The scrimmage got underway a little after 4:00 PM. As was the case for most of the games last year, the Gray team once again won. This time 7-1.
The Visitors were paced by Rendon's three hits (a double and 2 singles) and 2 RBI. The man is so smooth it looks effortless. Ratterree, Hague, and Gonzales each had 2 hits. Manuel and Maxwell each had a hit.
Sultzbaugh lead the Blue team with two hits (a double and a single). He scored the run on a double steal. Perrott had a single for the Blue team's only other hit.
Six pitchers each pitched 2 innings.
For the Gray team, Anagnostou gave up one run and 2 hits with 2 walks and a K, Simmons gave up a double to Sultzbaugh with 2 Ks and Spurlin allowed no hits but did walk 3.
The Blue pitchers were Cingrani (4 hits, 4 runs, 2 Ks and 3 walks), Duffey (2 hits, 1 run, 1 K, and 2 walks), and Hahn (5 hits, 2 runs, 1 K, and 1 walk).
