Mary Day Milbank Bodenstein (1940-2021)::
On February 9, Mary Day Milbank Bodenstein passed away.  Born in Illinois, she graduated from Rice in 1962 where she was a member of the Emily Bowen Literary Society.  She enjoyed a teaching career in Dallas and Hawaii and then worked for Great American Insurance and IBM in New York.  She and her former husband Bob raised two “amazing" daughters and she was active in the community.  Click here for the obituary.

Nancy Morrison (1936-2021):
On May 22, Nancy Morrison passed away.  A native Houstonian, she later in life graduated from the University of St Thomas magna cum laude.  Together with her late husband Lucian, they were among seventy-five Rice donors named members of the Legacy Society in 2013.  Also, the Brockman Hall for Opera houses the Lucian and Nancy Morrison Theatre, a 600-seat European-style theatre with an orchestra pit for 70 musicians.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Mike Gibson (1943-2021):
On May 24, Mike Gibson passed away.  A native Texan, he earned three degrees in Chemical Engineering including a BS (1965) and a Master (1966) from Cornell and a PhD from Rice in 1973.  As a First Lieutenant in the Army assigned to NASA, he was a pivotal member of the Apollo XIII Mission Operations Team.  The entire team received a Presidential Medal of Freedom for their efforts in returning the astronauts to Earth.  In 1973, he joined Exxon where he helped to develop new patented processes for the gasification of shale.  In 1981, he cofounded Carbotek.  Also, he was active in the community.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Phil Holt (1939-2021):
On March 2, Phil Holt passed away.  Born in Mississippi, he attended Rice through the Naval ROTC program and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1961.  After his Navy career (during which he earned a MBA from GWU), he worked for Entergy in Baton Rouge and Jackson.  Also, he was an ardent bird-watcher and he was active in his church.  He is survived by, among others, his wife Dabney.  Click here for the Clarion Ledger obituary.

Moshi Vardi wins Knuth Prize (Rice News)

Bill Hobbs:
On May 18, Bill Hobbs passed away at the age of 79.  He earned a BA and a BS from Rice in Chemical Engineering in 1965 and a Master of Science from the University of Michigan in 1966.  After Navy service in the Vietnam War, he worked for Coastal States and Citgo in Corpus Christi before retiring to Boerne seventeen years ago.  Also, he was active in the community and his church.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of fifty-six years, Alice.  Click here for The Boerne Star obituary.
