Sylvia Del Castillo (1936-2025):
On November 13, Sylvia Del Castillo passed away. Born in Massachusetts, she earned a BA in Romance Language from Rice in 1958. Together with her late husband Frank Del Castillo, they raised six daughters. Also, she was a “teacher at heart” and she “was deeply dedicated to her faith, her family, and ta life of service to others”. Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

On Sunday night, Debbie Allen received an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards. Her late mother, Vivian Ayers Allen, worked as an apprentice librarian at Fondren Library and became Rice’s first Black full-time faculty member in 1965, according to the Chronicle.

Captain Robert Bruce (1925-2025):
On October 27, Captain Robert Bruce passed away. A native Texan, he earned a BS from Rice in 1957 and a MS from UH in 1970 in Chemical Engineering. “He was a highly accomplished chemical engineer, a longtime active and reserve duty officer in the United States Navy, and a devoted family man”. He is predeceased by, among others, his wife Christine. Click here for the obituary.

On Wednesday, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase said that it is departing Delaware and reincorporating itself in Texas. Brian Armstrong ‘05’06 is Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Coinbase.
