In 2011, the late Rice golfer James Ragan (then 17 years old) teamed up with 14 year old Scottie Scheffler to win the Burke Cup at his home club in Corpus Christi. They had grown close as junior golfers.
In 2006, James (then 13 years old) was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. A natural athlete, he took up golf and walked on the Rice golf team. On February 17, 2014, the Rice junior passed away at 20.
In 2010, James and his sister Mecklin ‘13 founded Triumph Over Kid Cancer Foundation. Scottie, who won The Masters on Sunday, is a very generous benefactor to the Foundation and has served as honorary starter for the Foundation’s fundraising golf tournament. Read more. (Thanks, Mike Ross!)
