There are several Rice connections among the finalists for the Touchdown Club of Houston high school awards:  Finalist for Private School Lineman of the Yea - Stefan Gustafson (son of Sofia Adrogue ’88 and Sten Gustafson ’89), Finalist for UIL Offensive Player of the Year – Bert Emanuel Jr (son of Bert Emanuel ’94) and Finalist for UIL Coach of the Year - Rick LaFavers (former Rice assistant coach, 2007-11).  Click here for the complete list of finalists (scroll down to the bottom of the page).

In the fall of 1975, Rice played a NCAA level short softball season.  Future Houston mayor Annise Parker ’78 played shortstop or first base on the team.  The team went 0-4.  Other teammates included Ben’s sister Martha '77 (third base) and Dena Gudahl '78 (outfield).  Read more here (August 21, 1975 The Rice Thresher, p. 7)   (Thanks, Mike Ross!)
