Helen Morgan Johnson (1939-2021):
On June 14, Helen Morgan Johnson passed away.  A native Pennsylvanian, she graduated from Rice in 1961 cum laude with her future husband, Gaylord Johnson.  Together they raised three sons and she “developed into a successful amateur tennis player and teaching professional”.  Divorced in the mid ‘70s, she earned a Master of Education from UT in 1986 and a MA in English from UH in 1994 and she taught English and the tennis team at Del Valle HS in Austin.  Later in life, she was devoted to her six grandchildren.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Scott Pera Signs Extension Through 2024 (Rice Owls)

Mariah Riddlesprigger '14 (Thanks, Russell Shelby!):
Last night, two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo was top scorer with 42 points but Phoenix defeated Milwaukee, 118-108, in game 2 of the NBA Finals and lead the series, 2-0.  Giannis is the longtime boyfriend of former Rice volleyball player Mariah Riddlesprigger ’14.  Game 3 is Sunday.

Trei Cruz:
On July 5, Trei Cruz was assigned to Lo-A Lakeland from Hi-A West Michigan.

MLB/MiLB Scoreboard Yesterday:
JT Chargois (1-0, 2.70) pitched a scoreless inning for the Mariners.  Jordan Stephens (0-0, 4.11) pitched a scoreless inning for the save for AAA Columbus. 

Brock Holt (.228) singled for the Rangers.  Tristan Gray (.216) went 2-for-4 with 2 runs and a walk for AAA Durham, Ford Proctor (.220) homered for AA Montgomery and Trei Cruz (.250) hit the game-tying homer in the bottom of the ninth for Lo-A Lakeland.

KC Nicolaou:
Reversal speeds creation of important molecule (Rice News)

Christian Carr (1996-2021):
On June 29, Christian Carr passed away after a six-month battle with cancer.  He graduated from Rice with a BA in English and Political Science in 2019.  He worked as the Digital Marketing and Database Coordinator for the Houston SPCA.  Also, he was an amazing local artist and duct tape was his medium – check out this Rice Magazine feature about him entitled “I’m a Nerd About … Duct Tape”.  And click here for the Chronicle obituary.
