Houston composer judges inaugural Astor Piazzolla music contest (Chronicle)

Stan Silvus (1934-2020):
On March 8, Stan Silvus passed away.  A native Houstonian, he earned a BA from Rice in 1956 where he was The Westinghouse Scholar of the Senior Class.  Also, he earned a BS in 1957 and a MS in 1963 in Electrical Engineering from Rice.  He enjoyed a forty-seven year career with the Southwest Research Institute as an Electrical Engineer.  And, he collected stamps and N-Scale model railroad components and was active in his church.  He is predeceased by, among others, his wife of fifty-five years, Carol.  He is survived by, among others, their son Greg ’89.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Trivia Answer:
Lucas Luetge (for the Mariners on 08 June 2012, 1/3 inning pitched) and Tony Cingrani (for the Dodgers on 04 May 2018, 1 inning pitched) are the two Owls who have pitched in one of the fourteen combined no-hitters in major league history.  Luetge was a one-year letterman (2008) and Cingrani was a two-year letterman (2010-11).  (Thanks, Joe Graves and Mike Ross!)

Arthur Charles Jackson (1941-2021):
On March 25, Dr Arthur Charles Jackson passed away.  A native Houstonian, he earned a BA in Biology from Rice in 1964 where he met his future wife Fitzhugh Lee Jones ’65.  In 1969, he earned a MD from UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.  After a twenty-two year career in the Navy, he was a urological surgeon until he retired in 1991.  Also, he was “a passionate supporter of the arts” and he was active in his church.  He is survived by, among others, Fitzhugh Lee (they were married for 55 years).  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
