Dr Robert Grossman (1933-2021):
On October 7, Dr Robert Grossman, a pioneering neurosurgeon at Houston Methodist, passed away. Two of his daughters graduated from Rice, Dr. Amy Grossman Coburn with a BA in Biology in 1981 and Kate Grossman Rose with a Master of Architecture in 1992 and a MBA in 1998.  Also, Amy served on the Friends of Fondren Library board for several years.  Click here for the Chronicle story.

Ben Breed (1936-2021):
On September 30, Ben Breed passed away.  A native Texan, he started at Rice and received a BA in Physics from UT in 1957.  After military service, he earned a MA (1964) and a PhD (1965) in Physics from Rice.  After working for several entities, he co-founded Breed and Harvel Associates, his own consulting practice in 1975.  He specialized in acoustics and magnetics.  He retired in 2005 and, with his wife Janie, “spent many happy years in Austin and at their beautiful house on the ranch on Barton Creek”.  He is survived by, among others, Janie (they were married for 57 years).  Click here for the Austin American-Statesman obituary..

Dale Friend (1941-2021):
On September 27, Dale Friend passed away.  A native Texan, he earned a BA from Rice in 1963 and a JD from UT Law in 1966.  He started in private practice in Houston and then became a plaintiff’s attorney at Abraham & Watkins where he became a name partner. When he retired in 2002, he moved to Lake Tahoe.  Also, “he enjoyed collecting rare coins, traveling, reading suspense novels, playing poker, and spending time with his wife, two sons, and their children”.  He is survived by, among others, his wife Stacey.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
