Peter Vail (1930-2024):
On December 28, Peter Vail passed away. A native New Yorker, he earned a BA in geology from Dartmouth in 1952 and a MS and a PhD in 1956 from Northwestern. Immediately after retiring from Exxon Mobil in 1986, he enjoyed a second career as a professor in the Earth Sciences department at Rice until 2001. His “extraordinary life was marked by scientific innovation, dedication to family, and an enduring passion for discovery in the geological sciences”. He is predeceased by, among others, his wife Carolyn (they were married for nearly fifty-nine years). Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
