Rice to host groundbreaking for new visual arts building (Rice News)
Sander Shapiro (1929-2024):
On February 10, Sander (“Sandy”) Shapiro passed away. Born in Missouri, he earned a BA from Rice in 1951 where he was active in producing on-campus shows. Then, he spent one year at Columbia Law and earned a JD from UT Austin in 1954. After practicing in the public sector in Washington DC, he moved to the private sector in Austin where he was “hugely influential in the development of sales tax, use tax and franchise tax law in Texas”. Also, he was very involved in community service as well as he “loved music and the arts and read extensively”. He is survived by, among others, his wife of sixty-eight years, Lottie.
