Trivia Answer:
In 1996, Jeff Venghaus was the first Owl drafted by the Marlins.
Interestingly, Jeff played baseball and football at Rice. Per James Walker: “As a WR in 1995, he caught a TD pass against Texas A&M, giving Rice a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, on a trick play in which the Rice punter Tucker Phillips (also a high school QB), went back to punt, started to punt, and then threw a 37-yard TD pass to Venghaus, catching the Aggies’ special teams napping.”
Other Owls drafted by the Marlins include Jeff Nichols (1999), Mike Ojala (2010) and Jared Rogers (2010).
Lastly, there is another Rice tie to the Marlins - Assistant AD / Athletic Communications Chuck Pool was the first PR Director for the Fish. Earlier this year, he was the recipient of the 25-Year Award, a 2023 Special Award by the College Sports Communicators. Read more.
