Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition (Thanks, Michelle Smith '79!):
On Saturday, January 7, the 12th Annual Houston District Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, featuring twenty-five young singers, took place at Duncan Recital Hall at the Shepherd School. Of the winners advancing to the Regionals in New Orleans this Sunday, January 15, three have Rice ties including Dorothy Gal (MM ’18), Hayden Smith (MM ’23) and Audrey Welsh (MM ’24).

Marion Merseburger Freeman (1927-2022):
On December 29, Marion Merseburger Freeman passed away. Born in Shiner, she earned a BA and a MA from Rice in 1950. Together with her late husband, JH (he passed away in 2004), they raised 3 children. Also, she enjoyed traveling, she was passionately interested in the arts and she was active for many years in the Blue Bird Circle. Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
