February 14, 2018 - Gray 5, Blue 2 (6 innings)
 

Gray bundled together 5 runs in the fourth to beat Blue 5-2 in six innings.
 

Former Rice Owl John Simms pitched the first two innings for Blue.  Simms pitched shutout ball.  He allowed a two double to left to Chace Sarchet in the first and a lead-off single to center by Addison Moss in the second.  He struck out two. 

Nick Silber pitched for the first time in the preseason for Gray.   

In the first, Trei Cruz singled to deep short.  Cruz stole second.After a strikeout, Ford Proctor walked.  Dom DiCaprio singled to center to score Cruz Proctor to second.  The next batter lined to second.  The runner at first was doubled up failing to get back to the base. 

Silber faced three batters in the second.  Brandt Frazier doubled between two strikeouts.  Justin Collins threw him out attempting to steal third.   

Silber pitched 2.0 innings, one earned run, three hits, one walk and three strikeouts. 

Joshua Larzabal pitched the third and fourth innings for Blue. 

Larzabal retired the side in order in the third. 

In the fourth, Gray scored five runs on five hits and one walk. 

 Sarchet singled to right.  Collins walked.  Each advanced a base on a wild pitch.  Cruz batted for Gray to face a left-hand pitcher.  His sac-fly scored Sarchet.  A grounder to second with the infield drawn in failed to advance the runner.

Rodrigo Duluc singled to score CollinsCade Edwards doubled Duluc to third.  Ryan Chandler doubled to right to score Duluc and EdwardsDominic Cox singled home Chandler.  With Sarchet at bat, Cox was picked off first to end the inning. 

Larzabal pitched 2.0 innings.  He allowed 5 earned runs, five hits, one walk and one strikeout.

Ben Schragger opposed Blue in the third and fourth innings. 

In the third with two outs, Cruz singled to center.  Weyler reached on an infield error.  Cruz advanced to second.  The two executed a double steal.  Cruz scored on a balk.  Weyler to third.  A fly-out ended the third. 

In the fourth, DiCaprio singled to left and was out trying to reach second.  Braden Comeaux walked.  Luis Aviles was HBP.  Two infield outs ended the fourth. 

Schragger pitched 2.0 innings.  One unearned run, two hits, two walks, and one strikeout. 

After four, Gray leads 5-2.  There would be no further scoring. 

Ben Schwarz pitched 2.0 innings, no runs, one hit (a single by Kendal Jefferies in the sixth), no walks and a strikeout.

Nick Orewiler pitched  1.0 innings in the fifth and sixth innings.  He allowed no runs, no hits, five walks, and one strikeout. 

Final Gray 5-2.

February 12, 2018 - Blue 5, Gray 4 (7-1/2 innings)

Brrrrr.  It was cold out there.  Gray rallied from down two early to win 5-4 in 7 1/2 innings.

Kendal Jefferies tossed two shutout innings for Blue.  

In the first, Ryan Chandler opened with a single to center. Kelby Weyler forced Chandler at second base.  Weyler was picked-off first.  Dom DiCaprio walked.  A strikeout ended the frame. 

Dane Acker pitched the first and second innings for Gray. 

In the first, Trei Cruz Walked.  Braden Comeaux homered to left-center to make the score 2-0 Blue.  Ford Proctor doubled to left.  The inning was called following a strikeout. 

In the Gray half of the second, Rodrigo Duluc singled to the left.  Duluc was picked off first.  Two ground outs ended the inning.   

Jefferies pitched 2.0 innings.  No runs, two hits, and one strikeout. 

For Blue in the second, Chace Sarchet walked.  Dominic Cox reached on an infield single.  At that time it was decided to end the inning. 

Acker pitched 0.1 inning.  Two earned runs, three hits, two walks and one strikeout. 

Evan Kravetz relieved in the third.  He would pitch two innings. 

Chandler was the lone base runner.  He doubled to right center with two outs and was stranded.   

Addison Moss relieved for Gray in the third.  He pitched 1.0 inning.  No runs, no hits and two strikeouts. 

In the fourth ,Gray would tie the score.  With one out, Luis Aviles walked.  Duluc doubled to left.  Aviles to third.  Gneiting grounded back to the pitcher.  The throw home got by the catcher.  Two runners scored.  Gneiting to srcond base.  On a fielder's choice grounder by Cade EdwardsGneiting was tagged out between second and third.  Edwards moved to second as Gneiting kept the play alive long enough for him to reach second.  A strikeout ended the inning. 

Kravetz pitched 2.0 innings.  Two unearned runs, two hits, one walk, three strikeouts. 

Jackson Tyner pitched the fourth and fifth innings for Gray. 

In the fourth, Comeaux walked with one out.  He stole second and went to third on a wild pitch.  Two strikeouts ended the fourth. 

After four innings, it tied at 2-2. 

Jackson Parthasarathy pitched the next two innings for Blue.    

In the fifth, Gray scored twice.  After one out, Chandler doubled to left for his third straight hit of the day. Weyler singled to left.  Chandler held at third.  Dom DiCaprio looped a single to right to score ChandlerWeyler reached third.  Aviles bunted and squeezed Weyler home as DiCaprio took second.  The inning ended on an infield out. 

Blue would answer with a single run in the fifth.  Sarchet reached on a spinning single up the middle.  He reached second on a throwing error back to the infield.  a Strikeout followed.  Frazier's RBI single to left scored SarchetFrazier was stranded as two outs followed. 

For Tyner he pitched 2.0 innings.  He gave up one earned run on two hits, a walk and three strikeouts. 

After five innings, Gray was up 4-3.

Parathasarathy pitched the sixth against Gray.  He struck out three and gave up a two out single to Nick Tanner. 

Roel Garcia would pitch the final two innings for Blue.  Garcia pitched 2.0 innings with one unearned run, no hits, three walks and two strikeouts.  The run was scored as Comeaux reached on an infield error and two wild pitches.  The second was a two base wild pitch. 

Score 4-4 after six innings. 

Blair Lewis pitched the seventh and eighth innings for Blue. 

In the seventh, Gray scored one run to take a 5-4 lead.   

Chandler walked to open the seventh. Weyler bunted him to second.   Aviles walked.  Chandler and Aviles each advanced a base on a passed ball.  After a short pop-fly to right field, the runners held position.  Gneiting worked the count full before reaching on an infield single on the eighth pitch of the at bat.  Aviles reached third base ahead of ComeauxChandler scored.  Inning called on pitch count.  

Lewis retired the side in order in the eighth. 

Lewis pitched 1.2 innings with one unearned run on one hit two walks and one strikeout.

February 10, 2018 - Blue 5, Gray 1 (9-1/2 innings) 

Blue won behind the solid pitching of Matt Canterino and Willy Amador 5-1 in 9 1/2 innings this afternoon.  

I saw the first six innings before leaving to watch the Rice Women beat WKU 73-58 this afternoon. 

Canterino pitched five innings of shutout baseball.  He allowed just two hits.  The first was a two out single to left by Cade Edwards.  In the fourth, Brad Gneiting doubled over the center fielder's head with two outs.  Canterino struck-out six and walked none.   

Ricardo Salinas stretched his scheduled outing from three innings to four innings.  In his outing ,he gave up no runs, an infield single off his glove to Luis Aviles, walked two and struck-out two. 

Zach Esquivel relieved Salinas in the fifth.  Justin Collins singled to right to start the frame.  After a strikeout, Kelby Weyler reached on an infield throwing error.  Collins to third.  Weyler to second.  Aviles walked to fill the bases.  Khevin Brewer singled to center.  Collins scored.  Other runners advanced a base.  Cody Staab walked to score Wetler.  Inning called on pitch count. 

I saw Amador pitch the 1-2-3 sixth.  No runs, no hits, one strikeout. 

Esquivel pitched the sixth for Gray.  After a strikeout, Ford Proctor tripled into the right center field gap.  Braden Comeaux followed with a double down the right filed line.  Proctor scored. In the seventh Gray scored one run to take a 5-4 lead. 

Chandler walked to open the seventh. Weyler bunted him to second.   Aviles walked.  Chandler and Aviles each advanced a base on a passed ball.  After a short pop-fly to right field the runners held position.  Gneiting worked the count full before reaching on an infield single on the eighth pitch of the at bat.  Aviles reached third base ahead of Comeaux.  Chandler scored.  Inning called on pitch count. 

Lewis retired the side in order in the eighth.

Lewis pitched 1.2 innings with one unearned run on one hit two walks and one strikeout.

Final Gray 5 Blue 4.

February 10, 2018 - Blue 5, Gray 1 (9-1/2 innings) 

Blue won behind the solid pitching of Matt Canterino and Willy Amador 5-1 in 9 1/2 innings this afternoon.  

I saw the first six innings before leaving to watch the Rice Women beat WKU 73-58 this afternoon. 

Canterino pitched five innings of shutout baseball.  He allowed just two hits.  The first was a two out single to left by Cade Edwards.  In the fourth, Brad Gneiting doubled over the center fielder's head with two outs.  Canterino struck-out six and walked none.   

Ricardo Salinas stretched his scheduled outing from three innings to four innings.  In his outing ,he gave up no runs, an infield single off his glove to Luis Aviles, walked two and struck-out two. 

Zach Esquivel relieved Salinas in the fifth.  Justin Collins singled to right to start the frame.  After a strikeout, Kelby Weyler reached on an infield throwing error.  Collins to third.  Weyler to second.  Aviles walked to fill the bases.  Khevin Brewer singled to center.  Collins scored.  Other runners advanced a base.  Cody Staab walked to score Wetler.  Inning called on pitch count. 

I saw Amador pitch the 1-2-3 sixth.  No runs, no hits, one strikeout. 

Esquivel pitched the sixth for Gray.  After a strikeout, Ford Proctor tripled into the right center field gap.  Braden Comeaux followed with a double down the right filed line.  Proctor scored. Chace Sarchet hit a ground rule double to right.  Comeaux scored.  Collins walked to end the inning on pitch count.

February 8, 2018 - Blue 3, Gray 0 (7 innings) 

In a seven inning scrimmage, Blue beat Gray 3-0 as three Blue pitchers held Gray to a solitary single.

Dane Acker pitched 4.0 innings to of no hit, no run ball.  Acker walked two and struck-out two. 

Blair Lewis relieved in the fifth.  Lewis pitched 2.0 innings more of scoreless baseball.  Lewis gave up a single to Dom DiCaprio in the sixth.  He struck-out two with no walks. 

Ben Schragger came on to pitch the seventh for Blue.  He retired the side in order.   

Gray pitchers allowed 3 runs (one earned) on five hits.  The only earned run of the day came in the first inning on Ford Proctor's first home run of the preseason.  

Addison Moss pitched the first three innings for Gray.  The only run and hit that Moss allowed the home run to Proctor. Moss had 7 strikeouts and one walk in 3.0 innings. 

Brent Schwarz pitched 2.0 innings.  Schwarz allowed one unearned run on 3 hits (an infield hit by Proctor, an RBI single through the left-side by Collins in the fourth, and a two out double by Braden Comeaux in the fifth).  Schwarz walked none and struck-out two.

Nick Orewiler pitched the sixth and seventh innings for Gray.  Trei Cruz walked to lead off the sixth.  He stole second.  Cruz moved to third on a throwing error pick-off attempt.  Proctor walked after a pop-out.  Cruz scored on a passed ball.  Proctor to second.  A strikeout followed.  Inning called on pitch count.  In the seventh, Rodrigo singled to center. 

Orewiler pitched 1.2 innings, one unearned run, one hit, two walks and two strikeouts. 

Blue wins 3-0.

February 6, 2018 - Blue 5, Gray 0 (7 innings) 

With the threat of showers in the area, the scrimmage started without taking BP on the field.  There was one brief interruption of play in the bottom of the sixth.  After the two squads had completed 7 innings Ben Schragger was taking his warm-up pitches on the mound to pitch the top of the eighth when a heavy shower hit to stop play altogether. 

The Jacksons (Parthasarathy and Tyner) combined to shutout Gray.  Blue managed to score 5 runs to win today's scrimmage 5-0. 

Parthasarathy pitched four innings.  No runs, 2 hits, no walks and 4 strikeouts.   

The two hits were one each by Kelby Weyler and Addison Moss in the second inning. 

Tyner had his best outing of the preseason in three innings.  No runs, 2 hits, 1 walk, and 3 strikeouts. 

Moss singled off Tyner in the fifth and Rodrigo Duluc singled to lead-off the sixth. 

Roel Garcia pitched the first three innings for Gray.  Garcia retired the side in order in the first.   Chace Sarchet reached second on an infield throwing to open the second.  Sarchet went to third on a wild pitch.  Dominic Cox walked.  Cox stole second.  After a strikeout, Cade Edwards singled to left.  Sarchet and Cox scored.  Brewer singled to the up the middle.  Pitch count reached. 

Garcia pitched a shutout third inning with one walk and two strikeouts.

For the outing, he pitched 2.1 innings, 2 runs, 2 ERs, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts.

Kel Bordwine relieved and pitched two shutout innings for Gray. 

For the night, he pitched 2.0 innings, no runs, 1 hit, no walks, and one strikeout.  He gave up a one out single to Dominic Cox in the fourth.

Garrett Gayle pitched the sixth and seventh for Gray.  In the sixth, the brief shower hit with Ford Proctor at bat.  Proctor hit an infield grounder.  The wet ball sailed over first base.  Proctor to second on the error.  When play resumed, there was a fly out to right.  Sarchet reached on another infield throwing error.  Proctor scored.  Sarchet advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Cox walked.  He was out attempting to steal second on a nice throw from Justin CollinsSarchet held at third.  Brandt Frazier doubled to left center.  Sarchet scored.Inning stopped. 

In the seventh, Edwards walked to lead-off.  He advanced to second on an errant pick-off throw.  After a strikeout, Cody Staab singled to center.  Edwards scored.  Inning called. 

Gayle pitched 1.1 innings, 3 runs, no ERs, two hits, 2 walks, and one strikeout.   

Due to the weather forecast, tomorrow is now an off day.   

February 5, 2018 - Gray 9, Blue 0 (5-1/2 innings) 

It was Gary all the way today as the Gray offense scored 9 runs on 15 hits including 8 doubles and 2 homers.  Gray 9-0 in 5 1/2 innings. The Gray pitching tandem of Nick Orewiler and Evan Kravetz held Blue scoreless on one hit and two walks in 5 innings.   

Orewiler 1.0 inning, no runs, no hits, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts.  

Kravetz 4 innings, no runs, 1 double to Dom DiCaprio, 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. 

Gray would score three times in the first versus Kendal Jefferies.  With one out, Ford Proctor doubled off the top of the right-center field fence.  Justin Collins followed with a double to right center.  Proctor scored.  Chace Sarchet homered to right to score CollinsDominic Cox dropped a double down the right field line.  After a fly out to right, the inning was stopped.   

Jefferies continued to pitch the next three innings.  Gray didn't score in the second or third innings.  Cabe Edwards had an infield single in the second.  Sarchet doubled to tight to lead-off the third.  He was picked off second base.   

Gray would score two more runs in the fourth against Jefferies.  With two outs, Braden Comeaux was HBP.  Proctor doubled again.  Comeaux to third.  Collins doubled to right center again.  Comeaux and Proctor scored.  Sarchet was retired on a fly to center. 

Jefferies pitched 3.2 innings, 5 runs (all earned), 8 hits, 1 walk, 1 HBP, and 3 strikeouts.

Joshua Larzabal relieved in the fifth.  Cox greeted him with a home-run to left.  Khevin Brewer singled up the middle.  After a strikeout Cody Staab singled to right.  Brewer reached third.  Comeaux hit a sac-fly to center to score Brewer,  Proctor and Collins each followed with their third doubles of the day.  Collins getting his fourth RBI of the day.  Inning called after that. 

In the sixth, Sarchet walked.  Cox singled to right.Sarchet to third.  On an attempted double steal Sarchet scored as Cox was caught in a pickle between first and second before being tagged out.   Brewer walked.  Edwards singled to left. 

Game called.  Tarp immediately put on infield. 

Larzabal pitched 1.0 inning, 4 runs, 4 ERs, 7 hits, 2 walks, 1 strikeout. 

Final 9-0 Gray. 

Hopefully the scrimmage will come off tomorrow as planned. 

February 4, 2018 - Gray 6, Blue 3 (7-1/2 innings) 

Nice comfortable day for baseball before the Super Bowl.  Gray scored three runs in the sixth to take today's match 6-3. 

Matt Canterino and Zach Esquivel matched up for the first 4 innings.  After their outings today it was 2-2. 

In 3.1 innings, Canterino struck out eight with no walks with two runs and one ER. Gray had six hits including two singles by Ford Proctor and  two more by Chace Sarchet

Sarchet would score in the second after his single to right.  He was sacrificed to second by Dominic Cox.  Advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored as the throw to third went passed the third baseman.   

Brandt Frazier reached on an infield single in the fourth.  Sarchet singled to advance Frazier to second. Frazier scored on a single to right by Cade EdwardsEdwards got the hit on the tenth pitch of the at bat to end Canterino's day.  The only outs other than the strikeouts were the sac-bunt by Cox and Proctor being caught stealing. 

Zach Esquivel pitched 4.0 innings.  He allowed two runs each earned.  He gave up five hits, two walks with one strikeout.  

Blue scored two in the first.  With two out, Brad Gneiting singled to left-center.  Dom DiCaprio followed with a single to right-center.  Gneiting to second.  The runners moved up a base on a wild pitch.  Rodrigo tripled over the center-fielder's head to score Gneiting and DiCaprioEsquivel ended the first on his only strikeout. 

In the second, Addison Moss and Ryan Chandler each singled.  Blue would fail to score.  Frazier bobbled the single by Chandler.  He recovered in time to fire home to Justin Collins for the nice tag at the plate to end the inning. 

2-2 after 4 innings.   

Willy Amador and Ricardo Salinas followed for the next three innings.  

In his three innings Amador pitched 2.1 innings.  He allowed four runs (all earned) on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout.  

Gray scored once in the fifth.  Khevin Brewer walked to start the inning.  Weyler singled to left.  Brewer to second. With the infield running the wheel play Justin Collins hit a hard grounder to second.  Runner at first tagged out going to second.  Collins out at first.  On the double-play, Brewer reached third.  Proctor hit a slow high-hop grounder toward first.  He was safe and Brewer scored.  Inning ended on an infield pop-up.   

Gray would score three times in the sixth.  Sarchet opened with a single to right.  He took second on on a fielder's choice ground-out first to pitcher.  After a fly out, Brewer doubled to right.  Sarchet scored. Weyler singled to left.  Brewer scored.   Collins singled to left.  Weyler scored.  After a walk to Proctor, inning called on pitch count. 

There would be no more scoring by Gray. 

Salinas pitched the final three innings for Gray. Salinas retired the first seven batters he faced.  Kendal Jefferies doubled to left-center with one out in the seventh.  Cody Staab singled to center. Jefferies held at third.  Chandler's sac-fly to left scored Jefferies.  After a couple more pitches, the inning was called. 

Addison Moss pitched a perfect eighth with one strikeout in his first outing of the preseason.

February 2, 2018 - Blue 8, Gray 3 (4-1/2 innings) 

In a blustery chilly scrimmage on Groundhog's Day, the Blue squad bested Gray 8-3. 

The Blue pitcher's were Dane Acker and Garrett Gayle today.

Acker pitched in three innings.  His line was 2.1 innings.  He allowed 3 runs, 3 ERs, 5 hits, no SO, 1 walk and 1 HBP.

Gayle pitched two innings.  2.0 innings, 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 SO, 1 walk and 1 HBP. 

The Gray pitchers were Roel Garcia and Nick Orewiler. 

In his two innings, Garcia's line was 1.1 innings.  3 runs, 1 ER, no SO, 2 walks and 1 HBP. 

Orewiler also pitched in two innings.  His line showed 1.2 innings.  4 runs, 2 ERs, 3 hits, 1 SO, 3 walks and 2 HBP. 

The scoring occurred as follows. 

In the first, Gray scored three runs on four hits.  Ryan Chandler singled to lead-off.  After a pop-out, Brad Gneiting laid down a perfect bunt between the pitcher and third base.  Gneiting was safe at first.  Chandler, who was running with the pitch, was safe at third.  Andrew Dunlap singled up the middle.  Chandler scored.  Gneiting to second.  Gneiting and Dunlap each moved up a base on a wild pitch.  Kelby Weyler singled to center,  Gneiting scored.  Inning called. 

Blue scored four times in the second. 

Rodrigo reached third on an outfield error.  After an infield pop-out, Cade Edwards doubled to right.  Rodrigo scored.  Addison Moss scored Edwards on a single to right.  Brewer was safe on an infield error.  Trei Cruz was HBP to load the bases.  Two runs scored on Ford Proctor's double to center.  Inning called.   

4-2 Blue after 2 innings. 

In the third, Gray scored on Justin Collin's HR to right-center. 

Blue answered back with two runs. Dom DiCaprio reached first on an outfield error.  Chace Sarchet singled to right,  DiCaprio to third.  Duluc walked to load the bases.  Dominic Cox was HBP to drive home DiCaprio.  Bases still loaded.  Gray turned an infield double play.  Sarchet scored.  Duluc to third.  The inning ended on a strikeout. 

Blue had a 6-3 lead after 3 innings. 

Gayle held Gray scoreless the rest of the way.

February 1, 2018 - Blue 2, Gray 2 (5 innings) 

Better game time temperatures.  Better game play.  no one one got cold and there were no suicidal thoughts today. 

The teams battled to a 2-2 draw in five quick innings.   

The Jackson's opened the pitching for each squad. 

Jackson Tyner pitched two innings for Blue.  In the first, Ryan Chandler had a five pitch at bat that ended with a single to right.  Chandler stole second and went to third on the errant throw to second.  A foul pop-out followed.  Brad hit a sac-fly to center that scored ChandlerTyner struck-out the the final batter of the inning. 

Jackson Parthasarathy shutout Blue issuing only a one out walk to Ford Proctor. 

Tyner ran into control problems in the second.  Luis Aviles walked.  Brandt Frazier singled to left.  Tyner struck-out the next batter for the only out of the frame.  After Tyner walked Cade Edwards the inning was stopped on pitch count. 

Tyner pitched 1.1 innings.  One run, no ER, 2 hits, 2 SOs, and 2 walks. 

In the second, Parthasarathy gave up a single to left to Justin Collins.  A wild pitch sent Collins to second.  Parthasarathy struck-out the next two hitters.  Chad Tatum lined a single to left.  Collins scored.  Inning ended on pitch count. 

Kel Bordwine pitched the final three innings for Blue. 

Gray failed to score in the third despite a lead-off walk to Dane Acker and a one out walk to Chandler.   

Parthasarathy held Blue scoreless in the third.  Addison Moss singled leading-off.  Khevin Brewer made his first appearance of the preseason as he struck-out.  Trei Cruz singled to right.  Acker holding at second.  A fly out and a strikeout followed. 

Parthasarathy pitched 2.2 innings.  One run, one ER, 4 hits, 5 SOs, and 1 walk. 

After three innings, it was 1-1.

In the fourth, Bordwine retired the side in order with one strikeout. 

Brent Schwarz pitched the fourth and fifth innings for Gray.   

In the fourth with one out, Collins reached on an infield throwing error.  Going to second on the play. Rodrigo Duluc was HBP.  Collins and Duluc moved up a base each on a passed ball.  Dominic Cox walked to load the bases.  Tatum got his second RBI on the day on a sac-fly to left.  Collins scored his second run of the game.  Duluc and Cox pulled off a double steal before the inning ended on a strikeout. 

Blue was in the lead 2-1 after four innings. 

Gray scored one run in the fifth as Parker Osburn walked to lead-off.  Edwards singled to center.  Osburn to second.  Acker walked to load the bases.  Kendal Jefferies hit a deep sac-fly to left.  Osburn scored to tie the game.  The throw to third held runners at first and second.  The inning ended on a fielder's choice grounder to short that forced Acker at second. 

Bordwine pitched 3 innings.  One run, 1 ER, 1 hit, 2 SOs, 4 walks.   

In the bottom of the fifth, Brewer doubled to center to start the inning.  A ground-out to third, a line drive out to center and a strikeout ended the scrimmage. 

Schwarz pitched 2 innings.  One run, no ER, 1 hit, 2 SOs, 1 walk, and 1 HBP. 

Final 2-2.   

January 31, 2018 - Blue 7, Gray 5 (6 innings) 

The weather was perfect unfortunately the baseball was nowhere close to being perfect. 

Gray was up 4-2 when their defense fell apart.  After several miscues, Blue wound up winning 7-5 after six innings. 

Ricardo Salinas pitched innings 1 and 2 for Blue.   Kendal Jefferies pitched innings 1-3 for Gray. 

Gray scored two runs in the top of the first.  Ford Proctor singled to center with one out.  Andrew Dunlap forced Proctor at second on an infield grounder.  Dunlap reached second on a bad throw to first on the play.  Chace Sarchet singled to left.  Dunlap scored.  Sarchet to second on the throw home.  Brandt Frazier singled to center to score Sarchet.  He too took second on the throw home.  Inning over on a strikeout.   

Blue answered with one run in the bottom of the inning.  Ryan Chandler walked to open the frame.  Luis Aviles was HBP.  Chandler advanced to third on an errant pick-off throw to second.  Aviles held at first.Brad Gneiting singled to center.  Chandler scored.  Three outs closed the inning. 

Gray 2-1 after one inning. 

Neither team scored in the second.  Rodrigo Duluc doubled down the left-field line for Blue. 

Willy Amador pitched innings 3 and 4 for Blue. 

In the third, Trei Cruz singled to center for Gray.  With one out, Dunlap and Sarchet walked to fill the bases.  Frazier grounded to short to force Sarchet. Cruz scored. Dunlap to third.  Pitch count limit reached. 

Blue failed to score in the third. 

Gray 3, Blue 1 after 3. 

With one out, Gray got a single to center from Cade Edwards.  Edwards stole second.  A 5-3 ground-out to third left Edwards at second.  Jefferies lifted a pop-up down the first baseline that was dropped.  Edwards scored.  Jefferies to second base.  A strikeout ended the inning. 

Evan Kravitz pitched the 4-6 for Gray. 

Blue scored one in the fourth.  Parker Osburn and Duluc each reached on an infield errors.  With two outs, Addisson Moss singled Osburn home.  A fly to center closed the rally. 

Gray 4, Blue 2 

Joshua Larzabal pitched the 5th and 6th for Blue. 

Proctor opened the fifth for Gray with a single to center.  He alertly took second as Blue misplayed the throw back to the infield.  Dunlap singled to center.  Proctor scored.  Once again the runner moved to second on the throw home.  Sarchet singled to left.  Dunlap to third.  Frazier was hit in the foot by a pitch to load the bases.  A grounder to third forced Dunlap at the plate.  Pitch count ended the inning. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Blue scored four unearned runs.  Aviles singled off Cruz's glove to open the inning.  After that, many fielding errors and throwing errors followed. Osburn drove home the third run of the inning when he doubled off the left-field wall.  He scored the fourth run on an overthrow.  Inning called. 

Blue 6, Gray 5 after 5 innings. 

Gray failed to score in the sixth.  Edwards singled to right. 

Blue tallied one more run in the sixth.  Duluc opened with a single.  Batter out on iterfrence as Duluc attempted to steal second.  Duluc returned to first.  Dane Acker walked.  Duluc to second.  Moss dropped a soft liner into left that Dunlap charged.  He scoped the ball up and fired to second to force Acker for the defensive play of the game.  Duluc scored.  Moss gets the RBI but not the hit.  A grounder to second was the final out of the game. 

Final finally was Blue 7 Gray 5.  

January 30, 2018 - Gray 1, Blue 0 (5 innings) 

With a full moon coming up over the Medical Center, the Gray squad scored once in the top of the fifth to take today's scrimmage 1-0 in five innings. 

For the Blue squad, Zach Esquivel pitched three scoreless innings.  No runs, one hit, one walk, one HBP and one strikeout. 

In the second inning after Dom DiCaprio walked, Trei Cruz ranged to his left to make a nice stop and turn to throw to second to start a nice 4-6-3 double play for the first two outs of the second inning.  A fly to right ended the inning. 

In the third, Parker Osburn opened the inning with a double to left.  Nick Tanner was HBP  Each runner advanced a base on a wild pitch.  An infield fielder's choice cut down Osburn at the plate.  Tanner was held at second.  Addison Moss lined to center.  Tanner was doubled up at second as the throw from center beat him back to the base. 

Roel Garcia pitched the last two innings for Blue.  One run, three hits, and four strikeouts. 

The side was retired in order in the fourth. 

Garcia struck-out the lead-off man in the fifth.  Chace Sarcet looped a ball into right-field. The hard charging right-fielder couldn't make the catch. By the time the center-fielder retrieved the ball and threw it into the infield, Sarchet was safe at third base.   Garcia followed that by striking out the next batter.  Osburn got his second hit of the night with a single to center.  Sarchet scored.  Tanner singled to right.  Osburn to third.  Garcia closed the inning with his third strike-out of the inning. 

Matt Canterino and Garrett Gayle combined on the five inning shutout of Blue. 

Canterino pitched three innings.  No runs on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  The hits were a double by Justin Collins and a single by Cruz.

Gayle pitched two innings.  No runs, no hits, one walk and four strikeouts. 

Final Gray 1-0 in five innings. 

January 28, 2018 - Gray 3, Blue 3 (6-1/2 innings) 

A lovely late afternoon for a preseason scrimmage. Today it ended in a tie at 3-3 in 6 1/2 innings. 

Jackson Parthasarathy opened the pitching for Blue He retired the side in order in the first. 

With Jackson Tyner pitching for Gray, Blue scored one run in the bottom of the first. Braden Comeaux walked to lead-off.  He stole second.  Trei Cruz walked behind Comeaux. Ford Proctor singled to left.  Comeaux scored.  Cruz scampered to third on Proctor's single.  Chace Sarchet walked to load the bases.  Inning ended on pitch count. 

The Gray rallied with three runs in the top of the second.  Dom Dicaprio homered to left center.  Andrew Dunlap walked.  After a fly-out, Brandt Frazier doubled to left center.  Dunlap scored.  Duluc reached on a wild pitch strikeout.  Frazier to third on the wild pitch.  Duluc stole second.  Frazier scored when the throw to second got past the infielder.   A strike-out ended the inning on pitch count.  That ended the scoring for Gray on the day. 

In the bottom of the second, Tyner walked the lead-off hitter for his fourth walk on the day.  After he struck-out the next batter, Tyner got out of the inning with an around-the-horn double play.

Ben Schwarz pitched the next two nnings for Gray.   2.0 innings  1 R, 0 ER ,  2 SO, 4 BB 

Blue failed to score in the third leaving one on base via a walk. 

In the fourth, Cruz walked to open the stanza.  He stole second.  He then stole third.  When the throw to third escaped a late covering third baseman, Cruz scored.  Proctor then walked.  He was eliminated on a fielder's choice grounder to second.  Justin Collins walked putting runners at first and second.  An infield error loaded the bases.  Inning called on pitch count. 

Gray was up 3-2 after four innings. 

Dane Acker pitched the fifth for Blue.  1.0 inning  0 Runs, 2 SO 

Two fly outs and two strikeouts completed his inning.  Parker Osburn reached on a passed ball strikeout. 

Blair Lewis pitched the final two innings for Gray.  2.0 innings 1 run, 1 ER, 2 hits, 1 SO 

Lewis retired the side in order in the fifth.  In the sixth, Comeaux doubled to left with one out.  After a fly to center, Proctor hit his second RBI single of the day.  Comeaux scored to tie the game.  An infield pop-up ended the rally. 

Nick Orewiler pitched the sixth and seventh innings for Blue.  2.0 innings 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 BB 

Ryan Chandler greeted Orewiler with a lead-off triple to right center.  Chandler held at third on pop-up to short right.  Gneiting lined a ball done the left field line.  Comeaux snagged the ball and stepped on third to double off Chandler to end the sixth inning.  Luis Aviles wedged a two out walk between the first two flies to center and the third fly to center in the seventh.  The scrimmage ended. 

Final score 3-3. 

Tomorrow is an off day.

January 27, 2018 - Gray 2, Blue 0 

Yesterday: 

In the last two innings (7th and 8th) of yesterday's scrimmage, Garrett Gayle pitched for Blue and Roel Garcia for Gray. 

Gray finally got on the board as Brad Comeaux singled to lead-off the seventh.  He stole a base and scored on Chace Sarchet's two-out single.  In the ninth, Nick Tanner singled with one out.  He was stranded.  Gayle allowed one run on two hits and struck out three. 

Roel Garcia pitched two shutout innings against Blue.  Andrew Dunlap singled to lead-off the seventh.  Garcia induced  a 6-4-3 DP to eliminate the runner.  Frazier walked.  Pitch count ended the frame.  in the ninth, Garcia retired the side in order.  Garcia allowed no runs on one hit and one walk.   

Today: 

The team managed to squeeze in one inning of baseball before finally having to call it quits due to rain.  

Ben Schragger pitched for Blue.  Ryan Chandler lined the first pitch to the shortstop.  Kelby Weyler was HBP.  Brad Gneiting reached on an infield single to third.  Weyler to second. The runners each advanced a base on a wild pitch.   Andrew Dunlap tripled on a high fly off the right-field wall to score Weyler and Gneiting.  A fly to right ended the inning.   

Schragger allowed two runs on two hits and a hit batter with one strikeout.   

Joshua Larzabal pitched a perfect inning for Gray.  He struck-out two. 

That was the end as the rains started falling much heavier.  Hopefully tomorrow is a much better day to play ball in.   

January 26, 2018 -  

I saw six innings of the scrimmage with six pitchers taking the mound for two innings each.  Blue dominated the pitching and the hitting.  After six innings, Blue was up 5-0. 

For Blue, Matt Canterino opened with two perfect innings.  He  struck out four.

Willy Amador followed with two shutout frames.  He struck out two and  gave up singles to Cody Staab and Chad Tatum with two outs in the third. Tatum and Staab each stole a base to move to second and third.  Pitch count ended the third.

In the fourth, he walked Braden Comeaux to start the inning.  He struck out the next batter and closed his outing with back-to-back flies to center. 

Zach Esquivel faced six batters in the fifth and sixth. He struck out two, walked one batter who was eliminated on a nice 6-4-3 double play. 

Ricardo Salinas pitched the first and second for Gray.  Ryan Chandler walked.  Chandler moved to second on a passed ball.  He took third on a grounder to short.  Chandler was held at third on a grounder to first. Dom DiCaprio homered to left-center.  A fly to center ended the inning after Blue scored two runs. In the second with one out, Rodrigo walked.  Duluc stole second.  Duluc was picked off second.  Inning called on pitch count.  Salinas allowed two runs on one hits and a walk. 

Kendal Jefferies pitched the third and fourth innings. In the third after a strikeout, Parker Osburn doubled to left.  Cade Edwards tripled to dead center-field.  Osburn scored.  Another strikeout was followed by a pop-out to second. 

Jefferies retired the side in order in the fourth getting the last out on a strikeout.  He allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts.   

Evan Kravetz pitched the fifth and sixth innings for Gray.  Luis Aviles worked Kravetz for a walk to open the fifth.  Rodrigo Duluc singled to center. Aviles moved up a base.  Brandt Frazier walked to load the bases.  Osburn scored Aviles with a fielder's choice grounder to third to first.  Pitch limit met. 

In the sixth, Edwards opened with a double.  Chandler singled to center to score EdwardsChandler to second on the throw home.  Three outs followed.  Kravetz allowed two runs on three hits and two walks. 

At that time, I left to attend the Volleyball Team's annual Awards Dinner in the Patterson Center. 

Later WBB team beat UTEP 56-42.
