The 2010 Whataburger College Classic in Corpus Christi features UCLA, Mississippi State, Oklahoma and Texas A&M Corpus Christi, according to the UCLA schedule released yesterday.

Yesterday, the 2009 Aflac All-American High School Baseball Clasic was played to a 4-4 tie after 10 innings in San Diego.  For the West, Rice commitment Jameson Taillon (The Woodlands) threw 2 scoreless innings with 4 strikeouts.

Area Code Games, Long Beach CA:
On Monday, the Texas Rangers, featuring Rice commitments Austin Kubitza (Colleyville Heritage), Tyler Pearson (Lubbock Monterey) and John Simms (College Park), lost their final game to the Milwaukee Brewers (Blue), thereby finishing the Area Code games with a 1-3-1 record...Baseball America ranked Simms as one of the Top 10 pitchers in the event...Finally, I was remiss in not mentioning earlier than the team was managed by Randy Taylor, Mike's brother.

Jameson Taillon:
As previously reported, Rice commitment Jameson Taillon participated in the 2009 Under Armour High School All-America Baseball game at Wrigley Field on Saturday (8/8).

He was named MVP for Team One.  And, from Baseball America's Nathan Rode's blog: "Taillon, a big strong righty from The Woodlands (Texas) High, sat 94-05 in his one inning of work with a filthy breaking ball that was in the mid-80s.  He also managed to strike out the side.

Yesterday, the Texas Rangers, featuring Austin Kubitza (Colleyville Heritage), Tyler Pearson (Lubbock Monterey) and John Simms (College Park), lost to the Oakland Athletics, 8-5.  Today, the Rangers play their final game against the Brewers (Blue).  Click here for the tournament schedule.

Yesterday, the 2009 Under Armour High School All-America Baseball game was played at Wrigley Field.  Rice commitment Jameson Taillon (The Woodlands) was the starting pitcher for Team One.  He pitched 1 inning and struck out the side in order.  Click here for the website.

Rice Baseball 2010 Commitments:
According to a story in Tuesday's Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, catcher Tyler Pearson (Lubbock Monterey) has also committed to play baseball at Rice in the fall of 2010.  Interestingly, former Owl Travis Reagan was a Lubbock Monterey catcher also.

Like fellow Rice 2010 commitments Austin Kubitza (Colleyville Heritage) and John Simms (College Park), he is a member of the 2009 Rangers Area Code team.

Area Code Games, Long Beach CA:
Yesterday, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Texas Rangers, 7-5.  Today is an off day for the Rangers.  Click here for the tournament schedule.

Area Code Games, Long Beach CA:
As previously reported, the Texas Rangers, featuring Rice commitments Austin Kubitz (Colleyville Heritage) and John Simms (College Park) tied the Chicago White Sox, 5-5 in their opening game on Wednesday night.  Kubitza started the game and Simms pitched in relief.  According to the ESPN RISE recap (posted after I sent out the Rice Update yesterday), Simms "displayed a wicked curveball in the late innings".

Yesterday, Texas defeated Washington, 9-7.  Today, Texas plays Cincinnati.  Click here for the tournament schedule.

Rice Baseball 2010 Commitments:
According to College Baseball Blog's Donald Boyles' updated list of the Top Texas prep players-Part III, RHP Austin Kubitza (Colleyville Heritage) has also committed to play baseball at Rice in the fall of 2010.

Like fellow Rice 2010 commitment John Simms, he is a member of the 2009 Rangers Area Code team.  On Wednesday, the 2009 Area Code Baseball games begin in Long Beach CA.
