James Barefield (1934-2025):
On October 28, Jim Barefield passed away. Born in Florida, he earned a BA (’56) and a MA (’58) in History from Rice and a PhD from Johns Hopkins. From 1963-2004, he taught history at Wake Forest. In 2017, he was awarded the Medallion of Merit, the highest University honor. “He had keen senses of irony and humor and was beloved by generations of students whose lives he enriched.” Click here for the obituary and here for a tribute to him when he retired in 2004.
