Two Rice scholars earn Pulitzer Prizes (Rice News)
Francita Stuart Koelsch Ulmer (1931-2025):
On April 8, Francita Ulmer passed away. A native Houstonian and a descendant of the original three hundred settlers through Stephen F Austin grants, she earned a BA in History from Wellesley in 1953 and attended graduate school at Rice (class of 1958). She was very active in the community in organizations including the Harris County Historical Commission, the Garden Club of Houston, the Museum of Fine Arts and Camp Allen (founded in 1921 on land donated by her great grandmother) as well as she was committed to her church. She is predeceased by, among others, her first husband Philip Carleton Koelsch (they were married from 1959 until his death in 1993) and her second husband James Ulmer (they were married from 2000 until his death in 2024).
