Germaine Franco '84/'87:
On Sunday night, Disney's animated movie Encanto won the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. Encanto's songs were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and accompanied by musical scoring by Germaine Franco '84/'87.
2022 Good Brick Awards:
As reported, Preservation Houston will hold its Cornerstone Dinner to present the 2022 Good Brick Awards on March 4. One of the Good Brick Awards will go to Rice for rehabilitating one of the campus's first buildings, the Mechanical Lab (1912), now called Maxwell Hall.
Another will go to St Paul's United Methodist Church for restoring its neo-Gothic (1930) sanctuary in the Museum District. The architecture firm was Merriman Holt Powell with the following Rice ties: Susan Merriman '69, Bill Merriman '67/'68 and Jim Powell '95. (Thanks, Nancy Burch '61!)
Elizabeth Charles (1941-2021):
On December 28, Elizabeth Charles passed away. A native Houstonian, she graduated from UT Austin and served as executive director of the Friends of Fondren Library starting in the 1983/84 academic year and retiring in the 1995/96 academic year. There will be a memorial service today at 3 pm at St Martin's Episcopal Church (717 Sage Road), with a live streaming option. Click here for the Chronicle obiturary.
