David Eagleman '93:

Ruth Pfeiffer (1919 - 2015):
On September 21, Ruth Pfeiffer passed away.  She was married to longtime CAAM professor Paul Pfeiffer for 70 years when he passed away in 2012.   Theirs “was a lifetime of extraordinary service to early childhood education, to the Methodist Church and to Rice University”.  Also, two of their children graduated from Rice, Paul Pfeiffer in 1967 and Marilyn Vaughan in 1970.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Smartest Colleges (Thanks, John Montana!):
According to this list, Rice ranks no. 11 among the 610 smartest colleges in America.

Margaret Lewis:
Margaret Lewis recently passed away.  A fifth-generation Texan, she earned a BA in Liberal Arts from Rice in 1938.  A homemaker, she is predeceased by, among others, her brother Dr. William Strozier ’32 and her sister Rosamunde Stewart ’33.  Click here for The Courier of Montgomery County obituary.

Master of Liberal Studies program celebrates milestone (Rice News)

Kristine Sarah Tarabetz (1966 - 2015):
On August 16, Kristine Sarah Tarabetz passed away. A native of Connecticut, she earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from MIT and a master’s degree in environmental engineering from Rice in 1993.  She enjoyed a career “designing and implementing solutions to environmental contaminations”.  Also, she was a talented musician.  Click here for The Day obituary.

One character remembers another by Tommy LaVergne (Rice News)

Lewis Welter (1926 - 2015):
On September 5, Lewis Welter passed away.  A native Nebraskan, he attended Rice (class of 1947), served in the military and worked for Santa Fe Railroad, Sea-Land and Hapag-Lloyd from which he retired.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 67 years, Esther.  Click here for the Asbury Park Press obituary.

Two Rice Alumni Among AACSB’s 100 ‘Influential Leaders’ (Rice News)

Calvin Sparks (1920 - 2015):
On August 30, Calvin Sparks passed away.  A native Texan, he graduated from Rice in 1947 with a degree in Chemical Engineering.  He served in the military and he enjoyed a 30-year career with Amoco Oil in Texas City. Click here for the Galveston County Daily News obituary.

Rice announces $150 million in strategic research initiatives (Rice News)

Sidney Pike Solomonson Jr (1918 - 2015):
Sidney Pike Solomonson Jr passed away.  A native Georgian, he attended Rice (class of 1940) and then joined the family business, Dixie Disinfectant, in Dallas.  After military service in WWII, he rejoined Dixie.  Also, he enjoyed photography and fishing and was active in the community.  Click here for the Dallas Morning News obituary.

Jenny Lewis '05/'11:
On October 3, Strike Brewing in San Jose CA will celebrate its first anniversary with a beer bash.  Former Rice swimmer Jenny Lewis ‘05/’11 co-founded Strike Brewing and serves as CEO

Jackson Orr (1929 - 2015):
On September 6, Jackson Orr passed away.  Born in Oklahoma on “Black Monday”, he attended Rice (class of 1950) and graduated from SMU.  After military service, he enjoyed a career in insurance, specializing in aviation underwriting including writing “the plan for the policy on the fledging Southwest Airlines”.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 44 years, Marla.  Click here for the Dallas Morning News obituary.
