Dr. John Eliot:

Carole Mason Barton (1941 - 2012):
On September 18, Carole Mason Barton passed away.  A native Arkansan, she studied English, receiving a BA from Rice in 1963 and a MA from Northwestern in 1965.  She lived in Houston for the last 44 years and taught for UH and HISD, among others.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Betty Ruth Price Shiller:
On September 17, Betty Ruth Price Shiller passed away.  A native Texan, she attended Rice (class of 1956) in the premed program.   In 1954, she married William Shiller and served as a Navy wife in many duty stations.  She was also active in her church.  For the last 30 years of her life, she lived in Old Saybrook CT, enjoying her children, grandchildren and friends.  Click here for the Hartford Courant obituary.

Charlie Kriegel (1912 - 2012):
On September 13, Charlie Kriegel passed away, one month shy of his 100th birthday.  A native Texan, he received 2 degrees in electrical engineering from Rice in 1932 and 1934. He enjoyed a 40-year career in geophysics as a “doodlebugger’ with Humble Oil, later Exxon.   With his wife Lucy, he traveled the world of oil exploration.. Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Truman Black (1937 -2012):
On September 12, Truman Black passed away.  A native Houstonian, he received his BS from UH in 1959, his masters of science from Rice in 1962 and his PhD in physics from Rice in 1964.He was a member of the Physics Department at the University of Texas at Arlington from 1965 until his retirement in 2011.  He led a full and varied personal life and he especially enjoyed traveling the world with his wife.  Click here for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram obituary.

Earlier this month, the Mission Historical Museum named Gerald Bell and 4 other local residents to its “Wall of Fame”.

Madelyn "Wookie" Sinclair Johnson (1927 - 2012):
On September 11, Madelyn “Wookie” Sinclair Johnson passed away.  A native Louisianan, she earned a BA in English from Rice in 1948.  She married Jerome Johnson in 1949 and they have lived in Amarillo since 1952.  She was a “wonderful mother, a tireless volunteer, a skilled artist and a lovely energetic, creative and extremely giving person”.  Click here for the Austin American-Statesman obituary.

Rice Marker:
Yesterday, on the 100th  anniversary of the first day of classes at Rice, an official Texas Historical Commission marker was dedicated on campus.  Be sure to read John Bole’s excellent editorial in yesterday’s Chronicle entitled “After a sensational beginning, Rice grows into a Houston gem”.

Bass Campbell Wallace (1931 - 2012):
On September 12, Bass Campbell Wallace passed away.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Rice in 1953 with recognition as an Outstanding Service and a recipient of the Cameron Service Award.  After UT Law School, he went to work for Andrews, Kurth, Campbell & Bradley.  He practiced law his entire career there, becoming a partner in 1966 and retiring in 1987.  In retirement, he devoted the remaining 25 years of his life to the people and causes that were most important to him. As previous reported, Larry Joe Miggins, who worked at Rice F&E for over 25 years, passed away last Friday at the age of 52 in a car accident.  Today at 1 pm, the Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 2140 Westheimer Rd.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Larry Joe Miggins (1960 - 2012):
As reported yesterday, Larry Joe Miggins, who worked at Rice F&E for over 25 years, passed away last Friday at the age of 52 in a car accident.  A visitation will be held from 7 to 9 pm tonight at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 2140 Westheimer Rd.  The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 pm tomorrow, also at St. Anne’s Catholic Church.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
