A Message from Charles Szalkowski '70, '71:
It is with a heavy heart that I must report the death of my long-time friend and Best Man in my wedding, Billy Ray Palmer (Baker ’67 (’68)), on Monday, August 16, 2010.

He died as a result of cardiac incident on Thursday, August 12, from which he never regained consciousness.

Bill is survived by his wife, Kakie Palmer of Kingwood, Texas, his daughter Laura Elizabeth Palmer, a senior at Clemson U. and two sons, Jim Palmer of Arizona and Michael Palmer of Kingwood.

Bill was a standout pitcher for the Rice Owls baseball team, was drafted by the Cleveland Indians, and played in that organization for a few years.  A serious intramural football injury to his ankle after he was drafted kept him from realizing his potential.  After baseball, he graduated from law school at the University of Houston where he was on the Law Review.  He practiced in Houston, was inhouse oil and gas counsel of Houston Natural Gas and then Valero (in San Antonio).  He was general cousnel of Tejas Gas, a NYSE listed company.  At his death, he was working with Copano Energy.

While at Baker College, Bill was elected to the College Court and was widely known throughout the campus.

Annual New School Year Greeting from Natalie Kirchhoff '09:
Dear Owl Family & Friends,

I hope you are doing well and excited for another school year and year of Rice Athletics!  Here's an update on my current whereabouts:

I completed two internships in the last year with Disney.  I worked in an “on-stage” role at one of their deluxe resorts learning about resort operations, Disney Guest Service, etc.  Then, I moved over to the Recreation Line of Business in an “off-stage” office and technical role.  After “graduating” from the internship programs, they reassigned me to Operations Development where I support the leaders in charge of building new resorts.  Right now, we are working strong on Aulani (new Hawaii resort set to open Aug 2011) and other projects like Shanghai (China resort build) and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort (a new Orlando resort).  I am learning a lot and gaining invaluable experience!

In addition to working, I am training to earn my professional card in triathlons to one day represent the USA on one of their national teams.

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement.  If you're coming down for a Disney vacation, let me know!  I can be reached at nat.kirchhoff@gmail.com.

Have a "magical" day!
Natalie
