Fred Koch attended Rice from 1917 to 1919 and then transferred as a junior to MIT where he graduated with a degree in chemical engineering.  In 1940, he founded Wood River Oil and Refining Company which is today known as Koch Industries, the second largest privately held company in the United States.

Sam Houston’s great-great granddaughter Jean Houston Baldwin Daniel also attended Rice.  For some reason, she transferred to UT where she graduated with honors in 1937.  In 1940, she married Price Daniel, who became governor of Texas in 1956

.As previously reported, the Sam Houston Memorial Museum in Huntsville celebrates the 150th anniversary of the death of Sam Houston today and tomorrow.  The New York Times picks a visit to the museum as one of the most interesting things to do around Texas this week.

Avid Rice sports fan Nancy Burch ‘61 is the great-great granddaughter of Sam Houston.  She is a board member of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum in Huntsville which celebrates the 150th anniversary of the death of her great-great grandfather this Friday and Saturday.  Read more.

Phil Arbuckle and Ruth Arbuckle Russell, two children of Rice’s first coach Philip Arbuckle Sr, attended Rice in the class of 1945.   Also, his grandchildren Dorothy Russell Stockell ’76 and Donald Russell ’88 and his great-grandchild Sarah Moore Hunsaker ’95 graduated from Rice.  He was inducted into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame in 1975.  Read more
