Shamoo appointed vice president for research (Rice News)

James Albert Hand (1925 - 2014):
On June 11, the Reverend Doctor James Albert Hand passed away.  He attended Naval ROTC at Rice (class of 1946), served in WWII and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Alabama in 1948.  After earning a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in 1952 and a PhD from Vanderbilt in 1964, he taught at Willamette University in Salem OR until he retired in 1988.  Click here for the Mobile Register obituary

On June 13, Winnie Cowgill passed away at the age of 88.  She graduated from Rice in 1946.  She was “a loving wife, mother and grandmother and great-grandmother” as well as a member of various historical organizations.  Click here for The Courier-Journal obituary.

On June 6, Johnelle Jackson passed away at the age of 86.  A native Houstonian, she graduated from Rice in 1948.  She was an elementary school teacher before she started a family.  Also, she was active in her church.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
