John Hudson Wolda:
On Wednesday, 12-year old LHP John Hudson Wolda secured a 3-2 victory for ORWALL American over Northwest 45 at the double-elimination Little League Texas District 28 Majors tournament.  He is the grandson and namesake of RHP John Wolda ’56 who was a three-year baseball letterman (1954-55-56) as well as football manager for the 1953 Owls.  He struck out the final batter with the bases loaded, finishing the game with 7 strikeouts against 2 hits and 2 walks in 4.2 innings of relief.

I have added Keenan Cook, Ford Stainback and Austin Orewiler to the Owls in Summer Ball webpageCook and Stainback are playing for the Haymarket VA Senators in the Valley Baseball League and Orewiler for the AABC Northwest Wildcats.  Under Coach Jack Shultea, the Wildcats are presently 14-0 and have “no plans to lose any time soon”.

I have added John Simms and Skyler Ewing to the Owls in Summer Ball webpage.  Simms is playing for the Falmouth Commodores in the Cape Cod Baseball League and Ewing for the Wisconsin Woodchucks in the Northwoods League.  On June 22, he “teed off on a ball and hit it far over the wall in left field” in the seventh to lead Wisconsin to a 4-2 victory over Battle Creek.

Golden Spikes Award:
On Wednesday, Stanford pitcher Mark Appel (the nephew of Natalye Appel ‘80/’82), NC State pitcher Carlos Rodon and Florida catcher Mike Zunino were named the three finalists for the 2012 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, presented to the nation’s top college baseball player.

UIL Baseball Playoffs, State Baseball Tournament:
Today at noon, Cy-Ranch (Leon Byrd) faces Arlington Martin in the Class 5A baseball state semifinal at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.  Cy-Ranch is coached by John Pope, a two-year Rice baseball letterman (1988-89).

Sixty years ago this week, Rice baseball lettermen Jerry Sims (1956-57-58) and John Wolda (1954-55-56) and Coach Graham won the state championship as members of the 1952 Reagan High School baseball team.

NCAA Regionals:
The 16 regional winners are ten (1) seeds, three (2) seeds, two (3) seeds and one (4) seed.  The (1) seeds are Arizona, Baylor (N4), Florida (N1), Florida State (N3), LSU (N7), North Carolina St, Oregon (N5), South Carolina (N8), Stanford and UCLA (N2).  The (2) seeds are Arkansas, Oklahoma and TCU, the (3) seeds are Kent St and St. John’s and the (4) seed is Stony Brook.

The six (1) seeds eliminated are Miami, North Carolina (N6), Purdue, Rice, Texas A&M and Virginia.

Regional Winners:
So far, 11 regional winners have been determined including eight (1) seeds, one (2) seed and two (3) seeds.  The (1) seeds are Arizona, Florida (N1), Florida State (N3), LSU (N7), Oregon (N5), South Carolina (N8), Stanford and UCLA (N2).  The (2) seed is Arkansas and the (3) seeds are Kent St and St. John’s.

Regional Losers:
