Wilbur Hess ’35 was Rice’s first NCAA singles tennis champion. He was the younger brother of Jake Hess (class of ‘31) whose name graces the Tennis Stadium.  Read more.

Jake's daughter Karen Hess Rogers '68 founded the Rice Historical Society.

A native Houstonian, Robert Woodrow Wilson graduated from Lamar High School. “Having barely been admitted to Rice”, he managed to graduate Phi Beta Kappa in 1957, with honors in physics.  He shared the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of cosmic microwave background radiation, which served as important corroboration of the Big Bang theory.  Read more.
