Joe Scheffler (1910 - 2012):
On March 15, Joe Scheffler passed away at the age of 101.  A native Texan, he attended Rice (class of 1935) and graduated from the University of Texas in 1942 with a BS in Petroleum Engineering.  He worked for Shell Oil until his full retirement in 1980.  Throughout his life, he pursued a love of music.  Click here for the New Orleans Times-Picayune obituary.

On March 11, Ralph Teter passed away.  He graduated from Rice in 1950.  After he served in the US Army as a drill sergeant, he taught high school chemistry and physics until he retired from Region IV ESC as a Director.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

John R Hays (1923 - 2012):
On March 15, John R Hays passed away in his residence at the Forum at Memorial Woods at the age of 88.  He earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rice in 1947 and a M.S. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1950.  John was the father of Rice alums John, Jr., of Weiss, Jim of Baker, Jerry of Will Rice, and Jeff of Baker.  He was a great fan of Rice baseball and football, and enjoyed watching the Owls whenever he was able.

A memorial service will be held in Houston at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, tomorrow, Friday, at 3 pm.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
