Edward Jackson (1933 - 2014):
On February 14, Edward Jackson passed away.  He earned a BA (1955) and a BS (1956) in Architecture from Rice where he was the Southwest Conference discus champion in 1955 (156-4).  He was an award-winning architect as a partner in Jackson & Ayers in Fort Worth and later retired from Hahnfeld Hoffer Stanford., Click here for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram obituary.

On February 22, Rice freshman Emma Bravo passed away at the age of 18.  A native Houstonian and a Memorial High School graduate, she was studying Chemistry and Biology as well as Latin American Studies at Rice.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary and here for the Rice release.

Rice plans to demolish the Martel Center (aka Art Barn) soon and replace it with grass. The Warhol tree will remain.  Read more. 

Strike Brewing:
In April, Strike Brewing plans to open its brewery and taproom in San Jose.  Former Rice swimmer Jenny Lewis ‘05/’11 co-founded Strike Brewing in the Bay Area in 2012 and serves as CEO.  Read more.

Billy Berryman (1932 - 2014):
On February 18, Bill Berryman passed away.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Rice with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1956.  He was an Owl cheerleader in 1952.  He had “an illustrious career as an Engineer in the oil and gas industry receiving 23 patents for down-hole drilling equipment”.  Also, he enjoyed tennis and flying and he was a devoted family man.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Antone ("Tony") Peterson (1926 - 2014):
On February 11, Antone (“Tony”) Peterson passed away.  A native Houstonian, he attended Rice, served in the military and then graduated from Rice with a BS in Civil Engineering in 1949.  He spent his entire career in the family business, Peterson Brothers Steel Erection Company.  He enjoyed entertaining family and friends, he loved to fish and hunt and he was active in the community.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

John ("Jack") Joplin (1924 - 2014):
On February 7, John (“Jack”) Joplin passed away.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Rice with a BSME in 1945.  After military service, he worked for Gulf Oil and then the family business, Oil & Gas Supply Company.  He is predeceased by his wife of 37 years, Gabriella, who passed away less than one month ago.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
