Janice Voss (1956- 2012):
On February 6, scientist and astronaut Janice Voss passed away from complications due to cancer.  A native of Indiana, she earned a degree in engineering sciences from Purdue in 1975, a master’s degree in electrical engineering from MIT in 1977 and, after studying at Rice, a PhD in aeronautics and astronautics from MIT in 1987.  She enjoyed piloting small planes, volleyball, and windsurfing.  Also, she was a lifelong dancer and an avid reader, especially enjoying reading science fiction by earthlight.  Click here for the Rockford IL Register Star obituary.

Robert Pry (1923 - 2012):
On February 15, Robert Pry passed away at the age of 88.  A native of Pennsylvania, he earned a MA (1949) and a PhD (1951) in Physics from Rice.  He worked for GE, Combustion Engineering and Gould and also served as an Adjunct Professor at MIT.  He possessed an insatiable curiosity and passion for learning.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Tree Campus USA:
Rice designated as a ‘Tree Campus USA’ by Arbor Day Foundation (Rice News)

Nellis E McNeill Sanders (1924 - 2012):
On February 13, Nellie McNeill Sanders passed away at the age of 87.  A native of Louisiana, she graduated from Rice in three years in 1944.  After earning a master’s degree in Library Science from UNC in 1970, she worked as a librarian until she retired at the age of 79.  Also, for 21 years she was editor of the Clan McNeil magazine, The Gallery.  Click here for the News & Observer obituary.

Robert Harrison (1933- 2012):
On February 19, former Rice football player Robert Harrison passed away.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Rice in 1956.  Following military service, he was in the insurance business.  He was an active member for years in the “R” Association.  There will be a memorial service on Monday, February 27 at 10:30 am at the Rice Chapel.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Olive Horne Becker (1916 - 2012):
On February 17,  Olive Horne Becker passed away at the age of 96.  A native Texan, she graduated from Rice in 1937.  She was a founding member of Saint Martin’s Episcopal Church.  And, she was an avid golfer and a killer bridge player, having been a Life Master.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Hershel Rich (1925 - 2012):
On February 17, Hershel Rich passed away at the age of 86.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Rice with BS degrees in Electrical ('45) and Mechanical Engineering ('47).  After military service, he joined his father in the Phil Rich Fan Manufacturing Company and became president in 1956.  After the business was sold in 1981, he started a computer software company and real estate development firms.

Hershel and his wife Hilda ‘48 were actively involved in the community and at Rice.  They established the Hershel Rich Best Invention Award, the Hilda Rich Scholarship Fund, the Morty Rich Health Center Building and Leadership Rice.  In 1994, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus and they were recognized by Rice with the 2002 Gold Medal.
