John Peyton Blanks (1949 - 2012):
On December 24, John Peyton Blanks passed away.  He earned a BA in Physics from Rice (cum laude) in 1971 and a PhD from UT.  He “loved jazz, classical music, physics, math and opera”.  Click here for The Oregonian obituary.

Sea-level rises in northern Gulf of Mexico (Rice News)

George Dingus (1918 - 2012):
On Christmas Eve, George Dingus passed away.  A native Texan, he graduated from Texas Tech in 1941, served in the military during WWII, and worked for the Cabot Corporation for almost 30 years.  He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Pat Dingus, and their 4 children, all of whom graduated from Rice: Jane Dingus ’74, Ann Dingus ’75, Nancy Dingus Crites ’78 and Bill Dingus ‘81.  He “led and full and happy life of 94 years”.  Click here for the Midland Reporter-Telegram obituary.

Genomic frontier: The unexplored animal kingdom (Rice News)

Leonard Bratten:
On December 19, CDR John Bratten USN (Ret) passed away.  A member of the class of 1942, he left Rice to join the Navy when WWII started.  After serving in the military for 20 years, he and his brother formed a home building company and built over 4,000 homes in the Houston area.  Also, he was active in his church and in the Battleship Texas Foundation.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Darlene Azar Rubinoff:
On December 22, Darlene Azar Rubinoff passed away at the age of 85.  A native Ohioan, she attended Ohio State, Rice and St. Thomas  She was the author of 5 novels, 2 screenplays, 2 poetry books and 1 children’s book.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Christopher Brannon Outlaw (1967 - 2012):
On December 15, Christopher Brannon Outlaw passed away at the age of 45.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Rice in 1989 and moved to Boise in 1991.  He was a valued employee of the Simplot Company.   Click here for the Idaho Statesman obituary.
