Neil Robert Matzen (1946-2009):
On December 12, Neil Robert Matzen passed away at the age of 63 due to complications from brain cancer.  He graduated from Rice with a degree in economics.  He coached swimming and taught math to young people in Richardson for many years.  Click here for the Dallas Morning News obituary.

Seven Owls in Copenhagen:
Dr. Pedro J. Alvarez, George R. Brown Professor of Engineering in Civil Engineering, and Rosa Dominguez, a Ph.D. candidate in the Civil and Environmental Engineering program, and five students (Claire Krebs, a senior in Mechanical Engineering, Yves Meyer, a senior in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Rachael Petersen, a sophomore in Anthropology and Environmental Policy, Roque Sanchez, a graduate student in Environmental Engineering, and Fernanda Alvarez, a junior in Religious Studies) have spent the last week in Copenhagen attending the Climate Change conference.  You can check out the group’s blogs here.
