Boniuk Institute Lecture, December 2:
The next lecturer will be Islam scholar Zahra Jamal ’00 at 12:15 pm on Tuesday, December 2, in the Kyle Morrow Room, Fondren Library.  The topic of her speech is “Surviving Stalin: Practicing Islam Amidst the Purges”.  The event is free and open to the public but registration is required for the lunch reception beforehand.  Read more and/or register here.

Patricia Davis (1921 - 2014):
On November 16, Patricia Davis passed away.  A native Houstonian, she graduated from Rice in 1944.  Although she missed her senior year at Rice due to osteomyelitis of her hip, she still graduated with high honors.  In 1959, she married long-time friend, the late Col (Ret) Francis Eugene Davis.  After living in other cities, they settled on a farm in Shepherd TX where they traded real estate for many years.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Mary Lou Margrave (1927 - 2014):
On November 24, Mary Lou Margrave passed away.  A native Kansan, she moved to Houston in 1963 when her late husband John joined the faculty of the Chemistry Department at Rice.  She was a very active member of the Rice community.  She was a former President of the Rice Faculty Women’s Club and a former Vice President of the Friends of Fondren Library and she received the Meritorious Service Award in 1992 (for helping establish an interest-free, emergency loan fund for Rice graduate students).

Visitation with the family will be tomorrow afternoon from 5 to 7 pm at George H Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive. Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Elizabeth Long:
Rice sociologist honored with festschrift (Rice News)

William D Van Vorst (1919 - 2014):
On April 17, Dr William D Van Vorst passed away.  A native Georgian, he received a BS from Rice in 1941 and a MS from MIT in 1943, both in Chemical Engineering.  In 1946, he joined the Faculty of Engineering at UCLA where he earned his PhD in 1953 and he enjoyed teaching for almost 50 years.  Also, he loved to play tennis and to travel and learn about other cultures.  Click here for the Los Angeles Times obituary.

Nick Dameris (1930 - 2014):
On November 24, Nick Dameris passed away.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Rice in 1953.  He “started his career as a civil engineer at Hughes Tool followed by over 30 years at Texas Instruments”.  Also, he was very active in his church.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 51 years, Katherine.   Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Lloyd Bolton (1926 - 2014):
On November 20, Lloyd Bolton passed away.  A native Houstonian, he attended Rice until 1944.  After the V-5 Naval Flight School Program and military service, he returned to Rice and graduated in 1949.  While at Rice, he met his future wife of 60 years, Georgiana (Ann) Putney (class of 1950).  He enjoyed a successful career in banking including 30 years with Texas Commerce Bank.  A son-in-law, Robert Ladd ’78, is a member of the Council of Overseers of the Jones School.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
