Dr John Urquhart (1934 - 2016):
On March 19, Dr John Urquhart passed away.  A native Pennsylvanian, he earned a BA in English from Rice in 1955 and a MD from Harvard Medical School in 1959.  After 4 years of additional training, he enjoyed a 53-year distinguished career spanning “physiology, bioengineering, the biopharmaceutical sciences, and pharmaco-epidemiology.  He is survived by, among others, his wife Joan ’55 who he married in 1957.  He received an ARA Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002.  Click here for the San Francisco Chronicle obituary.

David Berkshire (1936 - 2016):
On October 13, David Berkshire passed away.  A native Houstonian, he attended Rice (class of 1958).  He worked at Texas A&M and later for 29 years at the Shell Bellaire Research Center as a research technician and chemist.  Also, he ‘had a special interest in the propagation and cultivation of native Texas plants” and he volunteered at Mercer Gardens since 1995.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Guy Jackson ‘69/’71 and Julian Pittman ’94 inspect the pool on top of and extending 8’ beyond the face of 40-story Market Square Tower, the tallest luxury apartment project in downtown Houston.  The building was designed by Jackson & Ryan Architects.

Four Rice bioengineering graduate students win prestigious fellowships (Rice News)

Linda Pike Alexander (1947 - 2016):
On Monday, Linda Pike Alexander passed away.  A native Texan, she graduated from Rice in 1969.  She is survived by, among others, her husband George ’68, a three-year football letterman (1965-67-68).  Visitation will be today from 2-9 pm at the Hurley Funeral Home, 303 W College Ave, Devine.  The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm.  The funeral will be tomorrow at 10 am at the First Baptist Church, Devine.  Click here for the obituary.

Shepherd School:
Yesterday, Monica Czausz ’16/’17 was one of four “superb” organists who performed at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.  One of her pieces was composed by Daniel Knaggs, a doctoral candidate in composition at the Shepherd School.  He was on hand to introduce the piece.  Read more.

Jann "Paula" Benson (1936 - 2016):
On October 6, Jann Benson passed away.  A native Texan, she earned a BA in Philosophy from Rice in 1958 and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1971.   She was a professor at Colorado State from 1967 to 1999.  Also, she had a lifelong love of music and her other creative pastime was gardening.  Click here for The Coloradoan obituary.

Patrick Campbell (1947 - 2016):
On October 11, Patrick Campbell passed away.  A native of Colorado, he earned a BA in Chemical Engineering from Rice in 1969.  As a member of the MOB, he met his wife to be Dawn (class of 1971) and they were married for 47 years.  After service in the Viet Nam war, he enjoyed a 40 year career in process and project engineering and engineering management.  Also, he was a big supporter of the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen.  Click here for the obituary.
