On October 20, Ernest Vogt passed away. A native Texan, he graduated from Rice in 1941 with a BA in Architecture.  After military service in WWII, he “worked as a structural engineer in the Houston area for many years before retiring to devote time to travel, golf, and family”.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Mary Armstrong (1927 - 2013):
On October 13, Mary Armstrong passed away. A native Houstonian, she graduated from Rice with distinction in 1948 and later earned a Masters Degree from UH.  At Rice, she met and married Henry Armstrong, her husband of 56 years.  She enjoyed a career as a school teacher in Baytown and she was also very active in her church.  Click here for Chronicle obituary.

On October 13, Roy Taylor passed away at the age of 86. A native Texan, he graduated from Rice and spent most of his career working as an accountant for Layne Texas, a water well drilling company.  He “loved golf, walking, bridge, hunting, dancing and most of all, his wives and children”.  Click here for The Commercial Appeal obituary.

On October 14, James V Cavender passed away. A native Texan, he graduated from Rice in 1979 with a BA in Economics.  At Rice, he played the trombone in the MOB.  He worked for Crum and Forster and for Physician Network Services.  Also, he “was an avid reader, enjoyed fly fishing, and was a classical music enthusiast”.  Click here for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. obituary.

Barbara Murray '69:
Murray heads Infectious Diseases Society of America (Rice News)

Hope Kobayashi (1916 - 2013):
On October 18, Hope Kobayashi passed away. Born and raised in Webster, she graduated from Rice in 1937.  After working in banking in New York for 4 years, she returned home to become involved in Kobayashi Properties and other family interests.  She enjoyed a “love of sports, classical music, piano and her beloved dogs”.  Her brother Riki, who was a Rice Chemical Engineering professor, passed away on July 19.  Click here for her Chronicle obituary.
