William Herndon (1932 - 2011):
On October 20, William Herndon passed away.  Born in El Paso, he received a BS in Chemistry from UTEP in 1959 and a PhD in Chemistry from Rice in 1964.   Since 1972, he had taught chemistry at UTEP and he was a former Chairman of the Department of Chemistry and former Dean of Science at UTEP.  He was an avid sportsman and a lover of music, especially opera. Sarah Faulkner Jackson (1931 - 2011):
On October 24, Sarah Faulkner Jackson passed away.  A native Houstonian, she graduated from Rice in 1953 with the distinction of Summa Cum Laude.  She was active in a variety of civic organizations including The Junior League of Houston where she was president 1964-65, The Garden Club of Houston and the vestry of St. John the Divine.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Milus E Hindman Garden:
The Milus E. Hindman Garden, just east of the Rice Memorial Chapel, is now open.  The Garden features the Barn Owl bronze sculpture by Geoffrey Dashwood, a generous gift of Becky and Ralph O’Connor.

Barron wins World Technology Award for Materials (Rice News)

Lennard Rice Blanton Jr (1941 - 2011):
On October 20, Lennard Rice Blanton Jr passed away.  He graduated from Rice with a BA (‘65) and a BS (‘66) in Chemical Engineering.   He worked in the petrochemical industry and as a school teacher for the Pasadena ISD.  He had a variety of interests including the monarch butterfly, scouting and attending concerts at the Shepherd School.  Click here for The Pasadena Citizen obituary.

Anderson Todd:

Lillian Horlock Illig (1909 - 2011):
On Saturday, Lillian Horlock Illig passed way at the age of 102.  A native Texan, she graduated from Rice in 1930 where she was chosen as a Rice Beauty.  She was President of the Friends of Fondren from 1973 to 1975.  Also, she was the founding president of the Tanglewood Garden Club and was a noted horticulturist with many published articles on the subject.

The memorial service will be at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church at 2 pm today.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

John Boles:
Dr. John Boles
, the William P. Hobby Professor of History, will deliver a faculty lecture about Thomas Jefferson next Wednesday, November 2, in San Francisco.  All Rice alumni, parents and friends are invited to attend.  The cost is $25 per person or $15 for recent alumni (’02-‘11) or current graduate students.  For more information or to register, click here.  The deadline to register is this Friday, October 28.

Lillian Horlock Illig (1909 - 2011):
On Saturday, Lillian Horlock Illig passed way.  She graduated from Rice in 1930.  She was President of the Friends of Fondren from 1973 to 1975.  She was the founding president of the Tanglewood Garden Club and was a noted horticulturist with many published articles on the subject.

The funeral will be at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, October 27, at 2 pm.  I will post the obituary when available.  In the meantime, the Chronicle profiled her here on June 2, 2004.

Alvin Nuckolls Jr (1920 - 2011):
On October 16, Alvin Nuckolls Jr. passed away.  A native Oklahoman, he graduated from Rice  with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1943.  After military service in World War II, he spent his career in the oil and gas business.  Click here for The Oklahoman obituary.
