In his preseason Top 25 poll released earlier this week, Walt Greenberg ranked Rice as #8.  Also ranked were Texas (#1), Virginia (#2), UC Irvine (3), LSU (#4), Cal State Fullerton (#5), East Carolina (#13) and Miami (#16).

Preseason USA Today/ESPN Poll:
In its preseason Top 25 poll released today, USA TODAY/ESPN ranked Rice as #6.  Also ranked were Texas (#1), LSU (#2), Cal State Fullerton (#3), Virginia (#4), Florida State (#5), Miami (#13), East Carolina (#18), Southern Mississippi (#24) and Stanford (#25).

C-USA Baseball (Thanks, Walt Greenberg!):
Yesterday, SEBaseball’s Mark Etheridge previewed Rice (subscription content).  He predicted that “Rice should win Conference USA and contend for a National seed”.  Also, yesterday, Mark previewed UAB here (free content).

In its preseason Top 25 poll released yesterday, Baseball America ranked Rice as #5.  Also ranked were Texas (#1), Virginia (#2), LSU (#3), Cal State Fullerton (#4), Georgia Tech (#6), Miami (#16), East Carolina (#18) and Southern Mississippi (#21).  Click here for the Rice press release and here for the Chronicle story. 

Historical Perspective:

Rice vs. Stanford Pregame Mixer, Saturday, February 20:
All Rice fans are invited to attend an ARA pregame mixer at 11 am or 2 hours before the Rice vs. Stanford game on Saturday, February 20 at Chuck Taylor Grove, near Sunken Diamond.  Traditional baseball fare will be served, with a complimentary bar.  The cost is $15 per person or $5 for kids 12 and under, if you register online before February 12 here.

Rice Baseball:
Contemplating The Bench (The R Blog)

Dr. Bill Martin:
The Rice Baseball Players Association cordially invites all Rice fans to attend our inaugural Rice Baseball Alumni Lecture by Dr. Bill Martin on Friday night, February 5 at 6 pm at Reckling Park as part of Alumni Game Weekend.  The topic of Dr. Martin’s speech will be “Moving Beyond the War on Drugs”.

Noted Rice baseball fan Dr. Martin is also the Harry & Hazel Chavanne Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Chavanne Senior Fellow at the Baker Institute.  The recipient of numerous teaching awards at Rice, he has written several books and many magazine articles.  Click here for more information.

Dr. Martin’s speech has been added to the ARA Events Calendar.   Please visit the webpage here and RSVP so that we can get a head count in advance and we can notify you if the speech has to be moved to the R Room due to bad weather.
