Tyrone Willingham, a former receivers and special teams coach at Rice (1986-89), became the head football coach at Stanford (1995-2001), Notre Dame (2002-04) and the University of Washington (2005-08).

Mary McIntire, PhD ’75 was named the founding dean of the Susanne M Glasscock School of Continuing Studies in 1986, making her the first woman at Rice to lead a school.  On Saturday, May 12, she will be honored with a 2018 Laureates Award.  Click here to read more and/or to register for the Laureates Awards Dinner.

Mike Massimino was the first NASA astronaut to tweet from space.  He previously served as an adjunct Rice professor and executive director of the Rice Space Institute.  Read more.

The trivia answer is the late J Fred Duckett ’55, “whose voice provided the soundtrack for Rice Athletics for over 50 years and whose encyclopedic knowledge of Rice sports history and devotion to this university were unmatched”.  On June 25, 2007, he passed away.  Tomorrow, Rice hosts the annual J Fred Duckett Twilight Meet.  (Thanks, Mike Ross ‘70/’74!)

Upon further review, it turns out that the Midtown Sears site was not bequeathed to Rice but instead was acquired by Rice in a sale/leaseback transaction with Sears in the 1940s.  The store opened for business in 1939.  (Thanks, Scott Wise ’71!) 

Under the circumstances, I am tossing out the trivia question.  My apologies for the confusion.
