Martin Brown (1922-2018):
 
On March 31, Martin Brown passed away.  he served in the Coast Guard during WWI and then graduated from Rice in 1959 with a BS in Civil Engineering where he met his future wife Gloria ‘50.  He enjoyed an over 40 year career with the Texas Highway Department, first in Houston then in Bay City.  He is survived by, among others, Gloria (they were married almost 60 years).  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Ruth Simmons:
A third act (Houston Chronicle)

Griff Lee:
On April 8, Griff Lee passed away at the age of 91.  Born in Mississippi, he served in the Navy during WWI and then received a Bachelor’s degree from Tulane in 1948 and a Masters Degree from Rice in 1951, both in Civil Engineering.  He enjoyed a career devoted “almost entirely to the development and design of fixed offshore structures” and “he was known as the father of the fixed platform”.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 67 years Eugenia.  Click here for the New Orleans Advocate obituary.

Carolyn Louise Nash Brelsford (1936-2018):
On April 24, Carolyn Louise Nash Brelsford passed away.  A native Texan, she graduated from TCU.  She and her husband John served as Co-Masters of Brown College from 1988-1993   She “provided counseling, care, and encouragement; and was a surrogate mom to students away from their families”.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

George Davis (1926-2018):
On March 31, George Davis passed away.  A native Texan, he served in the Navy during WWII and graduated from Rice in 1949.  He “was a very successful salesman, business and entrepreneur in the petrochemical industry.  Also, he was active in his church.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Mary Godfrey (1940-2018):
On April 1, Mary Godfrey passed away.  A native Texan, she attended Rice (class of 1961) where she met her future husband Brooks Godfrey ’58.  Together, they raised 2 sons.  She completed her BA at WMU in 1962 and earned a MA in English and Theatre from WMU in 1967.  She enjoyed a career in public school and also in local and regional amateur theatre.  And, over the last ten years, she became very involved in politics.  She is predeceased by, among others, her husband Brooks.  Click here for the Kalamazoo Gazette obituary.

Anne Foshee Alexander (1913-2018):
On April 1, Anna Foshee Alexander passed away at the age of 105.  A native Texan, she graduated from Rice in 1933 with a BA in English.  “A trailblazer ahead of her feminist time, she had successful careers in education, fashion art, advertising and real estate in New Orleans and Houston before retiring to a busy life of volunteering”.  She is predeceased by, among others, her husband Jake ’33.  Click here for the Austin American-Statesman obituary.

Tommy Countz '72:
The May issue of Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine includes a story about Tommy Countz, a fishing guide in Matagorda.  He graduated from Rice in 1972 where he played football. 

Mary Lee (1938-2018):
On February 27, Mary Lee passed away.  A native Texan, she attended Rice (class of 1960).  With her late husband Donald, she raised 3 children in Houston.  Also, she held a number of varied jobs and she was active in the community including with the United Daughters of the Confederacy.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
