Rice University Professor Lecture Series, January 22:

Herman Morris (1927-2018):
On November 17, 2018, Herman Morris passed away.  A native Houstonian, he attended Rice (class of 1946) but left in his third year to join the US Merchant Marine Cadet Corps.  After military service, he earned a BA from UT and a JD from UT Law School.  He taught at TCU and enjoyed a private law practice in Fort Worth.  Following the death of his first wife of 40 years, Judy, in 1992, he married his second wife, Shirley, in 1994 and she survives him.  Click here for the Star-Telegram obituary.

Glasscock School Event, January 28:
Former Houston mayor Annise Parker ’78 will speak at the Glasscock School at 7 pm, January 28.  She will “share insights on how Houston and other cities are shaping the world”.  The event is free and open to the public but space is limited and RSVP is required.  Read more and RSVP here.

Naomi Hamas Honored by Royal Society of Chemistry (Rice News)

Miles McInnis (1922-2018):
On November 7, 2018, Miles McInnis passed away.  A native Texan, he attended Rice (class of 1944) but left as a mid-term junior to join the Army Air Corps.  After military service, he graduated from Vanderbilt and then enjoyed a career with Stewart & Stevenson.  Also, he was active in his church.  He was predeceased by, among others, his wife of 67 years, Ann.  Click here for the Dallas Morning News obituary.

Ken Kennedy Distinguished Lecture Series, Today:
Next up will be University of Chicago Professor Andrew A Chien at 4 pm today at McMurtry Auditorium, Duncan Hall.  The topic of his speech is “Zero-Carbon Cloud: Reducing the Cloud’s Growing Carbon Footprint and Enabling High-Renewable Power Grids.”  A reception will follow.  The event is free and open to the public.  Read and to RSVP here.

Dan Zehr (1944-2019):
On January 9, Dan Zehr passed away.  A native of Arkansas, he earned a BA in Chemistry from Rice in 1966 and a PhD from North Dakota State in 1971.  He enjoyed a career as a research chemist at the EPA.  Also, he loved music.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 51 years, Ginny.  Click here for The News & Observer obituary.
