First, thanks to Bob Reinhold for the guest trivia question!

In the first NFL draft on February 8, 1936, 3 of the 81 selected players were from Rice:  John McCauley
(no. 10), Bill Wallace (no. 28) and John "Leche" Sylvester (no. 68).  Interestingly, John’s son, John, Jr., was a three-year Rice football letterman in the 1960’s and the 1964 Bob Quin Award winner.  (Thanks, Art Gottschalk and Martin Kaplan!)

New Rice football signee Randall Royall and his Stratford High School team reached the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals problem solving competition at Iowa State University last May.  Interestingly, his great uncle Roy Royall ‘37, a two-year Rice football letterman (1934-5), played on the 1934 Southwest Conference title team.

Four-year Rice football letterman Courtney Hall ’90 captained the San Diego Chargers to an appearance in Super Bowl XXIX on January 2, 1995 and later earned a JD/MBA from the University of Chicago.  He co-founded and is currently Managing Director of Hillcrest Venture Partners.

In January, 2015, he received the Ford Legends Award.  The Award, created by The Rimington Trophy and the office of President Gerald R Ford, is given annually to former standout collegiate or professional centers who have also made significant contributions to the football and/or business communities, or through philanthropic endeavors.  Read more.  (Thanks, Mike Ross!)
