, the great-great-uncle of Houston Astros 2013 first-round Draft pick Mark Appel (Stanford '13), lettered in baseball (1936) and basketball (1935-36) at Rice.  Other family members with Rice ties include Mark’s grandmother, Carolyn Alexander Caldwell (class of 1957), Mark’s aunt Natalye Appel (‘80/’82) and her husband John Casbarian (‘69/’72) and their daughter, Claudia Casbarian (’12).  Yes, if you're counting, 4 generations of Owl relatives!

On Sunday at Minute Maid Park, Mark is scheduled to pitch for the Astros in an exhibition game against Veracruz.  Read more.
