Trivia Answer:
The cotton processing works of William Marsh Rice’s Merchants and Planters Oil Company was located on the banks of Buffalo Bayou.  The Company was severely damaged by the hurricane of September 8, 1900 and the need for funds to repair it led to the acceleration of William Marsh Rice’s murder later than month (on September 23) by his valet Charles Jones and attorney Albert Patrick.  (Thanks, Louis Aulbach ’70 and Ellen Pierce ’91!)

Three of Glenn McCarthy’s four daughters married former Rice football players.  On December 2, 1950, Glenna Lee eloped to marry Rice sophomore football player George Pontikes in Waco following the Rice-Baylor game on that day.  On April 17, 1953, Leah married three-year Rice football letterman Merritt Leo (Sonny) McCurry (1949-50-51).  In about 1961, Faustine married two-year Rice football letterman Bob Garbrecht (1952-53).  (Thanks, Mike Ross!)

attended Rice and became the model for Edna Faber’s Texas oilman Jett Rink in her novel, Giant. In the September 18, 1930 Thresher (page 1), he is referred to as a “freshman football star”.  Read more.  (Thanks, Mike Ross!)

uncle John represents District 18 in the Texas House of Representatives.  Elected in 2004, he also serves as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.  After Monday night’s game, he tweeted “Wow what a game he pitched.  Nice job nephew”.
