Name change supports alumni engagement strategy (Rice News)

Al Woelfel (1924 - 2014):
As reported yesterday, Al Woelfel ‘47/’74 passed away on Tuesday.  He enjoyed a 56-year career as a petroleum engineer.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 68 years, Maxine, and his sons, Alan ’73 and Randy ‘78.  There will be a memorial service this Saturday at 1 pm at Matthew Lutheran Church, 5315 Main.   Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Chuck McConnell:
McConnell to testify before congressional committee today (Rice News)

Al Woelfel:
Yesterday, Al Woelfel passed away.  He earned a BS in 1947 and a Master’s in 1978 from Rice, both in Mechanical Engineering.  Married to Maxine, their two sons are Rice grads, Randy ’78  (engineer) and Alan ’73 (medical doctor).  He was treasurer of the Rice Historical Society from FYs 2004 to 2011 and he was chairman for the Class of ’47 during most of the 1990s, including for its Golden Anniversary Scholarship project.  I will post the obituary when available.

James Tour:
Tour to testify about nanotechnology tomorrow (Rice News)

James Little Wilkison (1924 - 2014):
James Little Wilkison passed away.  A native Floridian, he served in WWII, graduated from Abilene Christian University in 1949 and was a graduate student at Rice (class of 1953).  He enjoyed a 39-year career with Shell Oil.  Also, he was active in his church and was “a world traveler who enjoyed nature”.  Click here for the Skagit Valley Herald obituary.

Bill Arnold:
No time for rash action on Ex-Im Bank's future (Houston Chronicle)

William "Bill" Morrow (1916 - 2014):
On June 29, William “Bill” Morrow passed away.  A native Texan, he was a WWII veteran and worked for Exxon for 41 years.  He was a loyal fan of Rice Athletics, an avid jogger and active in his church.  Click here for The Pearland Journal obituary.

Patricia Lemmons (1929 - 2014):
On July 13, Patricia Lemmons passed away.  A native Houstonian, she earned a BA from Rice in 1951 and a Masters in Education from UH.  She was a librarian at St Johns and a teacher for 35 years.  Also, she was active in her church.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Martha J Smith:
On July 11, Martha J Smith passed away peacefully at her home at the age of 100.  A native Texan, she earned a BA in 1934 and a MA in French in 1938 from Rice.  She “served in the CIA where she was desk chief of the Latin American division, for which she was awarded a Career Achievement medal”.  Click here for The Washington Post obituary.

Sidney Clark (1923 - 2014):
On July 12, Sidney Clark passed away.  He attended Texas A&M and graduated from Rice in 1948.  After military service, he worked for Armco Steel for 34 years.  He was active in his church and in the community.  Click here for the Dallas Morning News obituary.
