Rice Architecture honors top students (Rice News)

Richard Sawyer (1947-2018):
On May 12, Richard Sawyer passed away.  A native Houstonian, he earned a BA in Mathematics from Rice in 1969 and a PhD in Statistics from the University of Iowa in 1973.  He enjoyed a career of over 40 years with American College Testing (ACT)  Also, he was an avid gardener, a talented amateur landscape designer and a self-taught accomplished stone mason.  He is survived by, among others, his partner/husband of more than 46 years, Richard De Puma.  Click here for the Iowa City Press-Citizen obituary.

Noel Parrish '28:
On May 5, Noel Parrish ’28 was posthumously inducted into the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame at the Lone Star Flight Museum 2018 Gala.  He was represented by Ira Gruber, Professor Emeritus, Rice.  Read more.

Elsie May Blanchard:
On May 5, Elsie May Blanchard passed away at the age of 101.  Born in Minnesota, she attended Rice (class of 1937) and the University of Texas.  She was a professor at Weston College in Oxford OH.  She is predeceased by, among others, her brother Dr Marcell Moraud (class of 1938).  Click here for the obituary.

Malcolm Solomon '02:
UST professor earns world recognition in film, music (Houston Chronicle)

Wallace Chapman (1951-2018):
On April 29, Wallace Chapman passed away in Dallas.  A native Houstonian, he attended Rice (class of 1973) and later served two years in the US Marine Corps in San Diego as a Bandsman, French Horn.  Afterwards, he enjoyed a 32-year career with Goodyear Tire.  He is survived, by among others, his wife Susan.  Click here for the Amarillo Globe-News obituary.

Howard Resnikoff (1937-2018):
On March 5, Howard Resnikoff passed away.  He was a Professor of Mathematics at Rice from 1967 to 1975 and he was a member of the Board of Governors of Jacobs University Bremen from its founding year 1999 to 2009.  (The University was founded, in part, with the support of Rice.)  Click here for the obituary.

On April 20, Florence Helm passed away in La Porte.  She graduated from Rice in 1957 with a BA in History.    In 1977, she received  Houston Yacht Club’s coveted Yachtsman of the Year award.  Click here for the obituary.

Marianne Long:
On April 20, Marianne Long passed away at the age of 87.  Living most of her life in Houston, she attended Rice (class of 1952) and then taught 5th and 6th grade.  In 1992, she moved to Colorado to enjoy and to help raise her grandsons.  She “had an insatiable hunger for new information” and “she was an extremely talented cross-stitcher”.  Click here for The Daily Camera News obituary.
