Boniuk Center Discussion, Tomorrow:
The next Boniuk Center discussion will be by President David Leebron, and UT Law Professor Lawrence Seger at 7 pm (reception at 6 pm) tomorrow in Herring Hall, Room 100.  The topic of their discussion is “The Supreme Court Gets Religion: Recent Head-Turning Cases”.  The event is free and open to the public, with registration required. Read and/or register here.

Goliard Travel Scholarship:
This year’s Goliard Travel Scholarship winner is Mitch Mackowiak who plans to travel to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile for a concentrated dose of stars and hills.  Click here for the Goliard Travel Scholarship website.

Clanton Rylander (1916 - 2015):
On March 12, Clanton Rylander Jr passed away.  A native Texan, he graduated from Rice in 1940 with a BS in Chemical Engineering.  He worked for Sinclair Oil Refinery in Pasadena and later for Atlantic Richfield Refinery in New York and California.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Hollie Hawk (1953 - 2015):
On March 11, Hollie Hawk passed away.  A native Texan, she graduated from Rice in 1977 with a BA in Fine Arts.  She “was a gifted artist in both paint and pencil”, she “had an incredibly quick wit and was always at the ready with a zinger or two” and she was a “member of Mensa”.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

On March 7, Mary Powell passed away.  A native Houstonian, she graduated from Rice in 1944.  She enjoyed a career in accounting, working for both the Fort Worth Club and Loma Plastics.  Also, she was “passionate about her family”.  Click here for the Dallas Morning News obituary.

On Sunday, bass-baritone Nick Brownlee (class of 2014) was named one of five grand prizewinners of the 2015 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in New York.  Read more.

Jack Crawford:
On February 27, Jack Crawford passed away at the age of 83.  A native of Missourian, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State in 1954, served in the military and then earned a master’s from Rice in 1959.  Both degrees were in Chemical Engineering.  He enjoyed a long and successful career with Mobil Oil.  Also, he was an enthusiastic golfer, with three holes-in-one to his name.  Click here for the Finger Lakes Times obituary.

Jim Whitson Jr (1944 - 2015):
On March 18, Jim Whitson Jr passed away.  He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rice in 1955.  He enjoyed a long career as an oilman, first at Pan Am and then as an independent oil operator beginning in 1962 until his final days.  He attended many Rice baseball games the last few years.  He was “a man of drive and ambition and a mentor to many”.   Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
