Nursery of the Future:
UNICEF report features Rice's 'Nursery of the Future' (Rice News)

Gregory Catsinas (1924 - 2014):
On November 12, Gregory Catsinas passed away.  A native Houstonian, he earned a BA in Chemical Engineering from Rice in 1950.  He enjoyed a long career in the oil and gas industry.  Also, he was active in his church.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 60 years, Helen.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Kelly Day Knight (1970 - 2014):
On October 31, Kelly Day Knight passed away from complications of Cystic Fibrosis.  A native Californian, he attended Rice (class of 1992) where she studied French and English.  She became a school teacher in California.  Also, she enjoyed traveling all over the world with her husband, loved cooking and was a voracious reader.  Click here for the Monterey Herald obituary.

Jim Douglass (1930 - 2014):
On November 7, Jim Douglass.  A native Texan, he earned a BA from Rice in 1952 and a PhD from UT in 1958, both in chemistry.  He taught organic chemistry at the University of Kentucky and Marshall where he also served as department chair.  Also, he loved travel, symphony and the opera.  Click here for the Herald Tribune obituary.

Betty Blount Wood (1929 - 2014):
On October 30, Betty Blount Wood passed away.  A fifth generation Texan and a great granddaughter of Colonel Stephen William Blount, she graduated from Rice in 1949.  She was a school teacher and then in 1964 she established her own court-reporting business, which she managed for over 30 years. She was a lifelong supporter of Rice including service on the Fondren Library board of directors.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Larry Hermes (1924 - 2014):
On Monday, Larry Hermes ’44, who attended his 70th class reunion lunch at Rice last Friday, passed away.  He was a proud veteran of the US Navy in World War II who participated in the landing on Iwo Jima for which he received the Bronze Star award for bravery in action.  He enjoyed a professional career involving the exploration and production of minerals until his retirement two years ago.

He was an avid fan of Rice Athletics, a supporter of the Shepherd School and a  member of ROMEO.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 59 years, Kay, and his sister, Jessie Sloan ‘59.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
